Position switch O-ring ???

Quick Question guys:

I go to Nissan to pick this up, tells me this doesn't exist. Guy shows me a pic and everything. With no O-ring (#16) in the diagram.

Now, does this O-ring attatch to the position switch or go between the position swtich and transmission. It seems like there should be some sort of gasket there or does the plastic switch just seal with the tranny?

The only way to get the o-ring from the dealer is to buy the sensor itself. They do not sell that o-ring alone. The price of the part isn't ridiculous, but considering you only need the o-ring, it definetly would be. You can ask them to look around for misc o-rings that they use. They won't have them though. Your best bet is to go to an industrial supply shop, or hydraulic shop, or automotive shop, etc, to find an identical dimensioned ring, that is oil safe.

So it goes on the sensor, NOT between the sensor and the tranny?

I had the guy pull a new sensor and saw the small ring on IT. I think the part was around $17.

Will this O ring cause or stop a minor leak with syn. gear oil? I have the smallest amount "sweating" on the bottom of the tranny.

It fits in a groove on the sensor. It is supposed to seal radially between the sensor and the tranny throughout the range of contact. And it is the bolt that holds the sensor in position.

As for the leak. It depends. Won't know until you try. Usually, frequent, as in more than 2-3 times, removal and reinstall often causes the seal to leak eventually. Although for some people, they've had their last plenty long even though they remove and reuse it a bunch. In either case, it's not going to cost you a lot to see if the seal is the problem.

Correct, the parts fiches do not call out this o-ring as a separate part. Fortunately, the switch is only $18. It's a good thing to replace since the sensor is so brittle and easy to break.

I just measured this o-ring though in an attempt to size it - my best guess is AS568A - 029, but o-rings are hard to measure. If you try this just check on it for leakage a day after you install it.

Don't ever buy any kind of sensor that is non OEM. That is the one thing that i'll never cheap out on.

I replaced my Park/Neutral position switch after the tranny swap because it was leaking a little... I wanted to just get the O-ring but as already stated, Nissan doesn't allow such an abomination..... Seriously though, when you go in there to ask for just a wire between sensors, or a gasket or something like that, they act like you just asked them to give you a free car or something.... I hate the guys at parts counters.... they're always jerks to me.... hahaha...
