Who has the most reliable 4th Gen Maxima ?
Well my 97 SE just turned 150K today, and I'm really glad that she is holding up pretty good for her age, and healthy dose of abuse she gets on daily basis.
I know that there are owners who constantly have problems with their cars,
and there are more fortunate ones who enjoy years and thousands of trouble free miles.
if you are the lucky one and fall in the second category , please share your experience.
lets follow this simple pattern:
1. Number of years owned
2. Total miles driven
3. Original engine/tranny
4. Number of times the car got you stranded,ie: no start etc
5. Part/component that failed
feel free to add additional info.
1.4
2.70K
3.both original
4.1
5.Starter
Lets see who has enjoyed most trouble free miles !!!
and Happy Holidays BTW
Nick.

2. >6k miles.
3. all original baby!
4. 3
5. first time the clutch went out (well the pressure plate, but it didn't leave me stranded, 'cuz I'm 1337 and I DON'T NEED NO STINKIN' CLUTCH), then the alarm screwed up which was the dealer's fault, then the starter fried--it wasn't OEM. Then the alarm screwed up again, stupid dealer.
I think if the PO hadn't screwed around with the car and installed the funky alarm and aftermarket starter, I would be totally trouble-free/strand-free (well besides the clutch).
I have 157k btw.

this is coming from someone who has posted a few times about doing all sorts of crap to his car...just because you seem to have bad luck, self inflicted or not, doesn't mean every other maxima is garbage...

UPDATE:
This thread must have jinxed me. I just went to get a few things done. Stopped in town to get gas, started the car and it seemed to be running on only 5 cylinders. I drove to the shopping center next to the gas station, still running on what seemed like only 5 cylinders, shut the car off and went inside to get a card. I came out, got in the car, crank crank crank crank crank.............. NO START!!!!!

Walked home, got my neighbor and my boy and we pushed the thing 2 blocks home. I just pulled 3 codes.
1008 Evap purge volume control valve - maybe because I just got gas?
0802 Crank position POS - thats why It's not starting
0304 Hopefully just a ghost code, it's been running excellent up to now.
Merry Christmas to me.

New member says "WTF??!!"
I just bought my third Maxima yesterday, a 1998 SE from the o/o with 88k, just signed up to this forum and then see this thread --- YEOW!!
My first car was a '91 GXE I bought new and put 250k on it and it was a sweetheart, the second was a '93 SE I got six years ago with 92k and now has 220k. Had it not been for some idiot mechanics who f*cked a few things up it would have been trouble-free. But I'm not liking what I'm reading here ...
What's the deal with these 4th gen's anyway and should I turn it around while there's still time??
Gary in Fallbrook, CA
(It's only 80 degrees today)

2. 66,000
3. Yes
4. 0
5. nope
Currently has 157k on it. I'd say that another thing that needs to be added to the list is cost of maintanence/fixes/preventative maintanence
in which case in the past two years I've spent nearly 3 grand.

1. 8.5 years
2. 118Kms
3. all original
4. 0
5. nothing, possibly a RF wheel bearing going
Started every day in either Ottawa or London Ontario winters. This is one of the reasons i'm going to have a hard time getting rid of this car. I've become used to reliability and anything less reliable would anger me.

my battery is about to fail and so are my front lights...so this weekend I got an Optima redtop and some new lights...fun times

1) 7 years
2) 89K
3) Original engine/tranny
4) NONE
5) 3 O2 sensors, 3 ignition coils, alternator, knock sensor, moonroof, suspension components due to bad roads
So far, it has been very reliable. Regular maintenance sure does help keep it running smoothly.
