I have the same model car and had the same problem. I ordered a new shift boot from my local Nissan dealer for something like $60 and a 2001 AE shift **** from Courtesy Nissan (www.courtesyparts.com) for about $60 also (I think). I'd call them up and see how much they want, compared to your local dealer.

I've got an extra AE shift **** (manual of course) that I no longer need. I would be willing to sell it if you were interested.

Hey guys, I bought my car used, and was wondering...does your shift **** have the H-pattern imbedded on the top? My shift **** doesn't say anything, and has a "baseball" stitching on it. Just wanted to know if it was factory- if it is gonna get a Isotta Bolero polished, but never did find out. Also, it twists off? Mine won't twist.

My 1997 shift **** is black leather and has the embossed shift pattern on top, as well as the baseball stitching. It twists off (lefty loosey), but Nissan affixed it on to the shifter with industrial strength bondo. Wrap your shift **** in cloth and twist with a wrench to break the glue.
