1st gear grinding when downshifting

When I am coming to a stop and I put the clutch in and put it back in first it is starting to grind. I never used to do that before. The faster I am going the harder it grinds. What do you think the problem is? I had the tranny rebuilt about 6 months ago. Please let me know. Thanks.

DO NOT downshift into first unless:

1) You're going less than 5 mph.
2) You can do a perfect double clutch rev match.

I had the tranny rebuilt for bearings or something. When I mean downshift I mean when coming up to a stop I shift into first but still have the clutch in all the way. I never put the clutch back out till I am accelerating again.

how fast is the car moving ? what im trying to say is that even comming to a light unless the car is stopped or under the 5mph the gear is locked out if you force it it will grind. now lets say you pulled up to the light and the car stopped now you try to get it into first gear and it dosent ? then my guess is first gear syncro....man id be pi$$ed....

I have never had a problem before with it. I am only doing like 10mph or less. Do you think it has something to do with the clutch?

Mine doesnt grind. When I am coming to a light with the clutch in I always go through my gears till I come to first but it doesnt slide in smooth like it does when im sitting still. I have to push kinda hard to get it in when im still rolling

That is how mine used to be but now it grinds. Do you think I might need a new clutch?

basically... wait until you are almost stopped to push it into first. When I first started driving manual I would put it in gear as I was coming to a stop so it would be ready to go once I was actually stopped (and it would let me shift into first anywhere below 20mph). I figured as long as it went smoothly into gear there was no problem. But I quickly learned how Manual trannies actually worked and I realized that was not good to do It wears out the sychros the same way launching at 3000rpm would wear out the clutch faster than at 1000rpm (is that a good analogy?)

It still should be grinding. I have a feeling that it is the clutch but I have no idea. I hope it has nothing to do with the tranny.

if its grinding like that and your forcing it into 1st then you ruined the syncro by wearing it out over time. its not the clutch. if it was the clutch all the gears would be giving you trouble as the clutch wouldnt be disengaging all the way.

Have no fear, your first gear synchro is just going out. You only use it when you shift into first at speed, so if you can either refrain from doing that or teach yourself to double clutch, (I've been double clutching into first since I got the car, basically) you'll be fine.

BIG NO-NO

Bro what are you doing......your goijng to ruin your car without even trying....

my rule is as follows////
1.) Never Down SHiftr into first gear.
-There is no reason that you should ever have to down-shift into first gear......thats why you have brakes...use them.........never down-shift past second gear........your car should never be in 1st gear unless you are at a complete stop........thats right,..,.......that means that when you go to a stop sign and you dont want to stop and put it into first then you can almost stop and then roll through the stop sign while having the car in second gear the whole time and without putting down your clutch.......

just some personal suggestions for driving stick..............i hope trhey help somone one.....

Downshifting to first? I only do that if my car is at a CRAWL or stopped. I use second just fine from ~ 2-3mph and up.

I've never driven a car that liked being put into first without almost completely stopping...
