Realistic expectations?

My goal for the '99 gxe auto is to run a 14.7-14.9 at the track with some consistency. Let me know if you think my goal is realistic based upon my listed setup. What I plan on doing to get there is as follows:

mevi
Budget Y-pipe
megan muffler
modified stock intake w k&n
iridium plugs (no diff, I know)
tein-H drop w 17" tantrums (no spin)
minor weight reduction

you or the car? :chuckle:

The mod to the intake isn't going to give you any gains (imho).

5MT or 4AT?

7th word is auto, so I'm guessing auto.

EDIT: gah, mid-post interruptions caused this info to be out-of-date

I think it's possible with the mods you have mentioned. I don't think I'd do the intake as it seems to hurt autos more than help them. I would personally do a(n?) 00VI instead of a MEVI, since you won't have an extended rev limit (and can't, I think, since you have a 99). This would give you at least another tenth or so.

Cosmo459sx 01-09-2006 02:30 PM

okay, thanks, i'll look into the 00VI. And as far as the intake, it is just a severely hacked stock box plus the drop in. I did honestly notice a tiny bit more mid-range, as well as some lag on the low end and falling off way short of the redline. Was it worth it, I can now say (like many of you) that it wasn't. What little I possibly gained mid-range wasn't worth losing everything else. So who has an un-hacked box I can buy.

NmexMAX 01-09-2006 02:32 PM

Once again,
Reading > me :shiner:

You'll have a hard time getting there with stock rev limit, but it can and has been done.

Lose the 17's, find a good launch pattern, lose some weight, get a SAFC or SMT-6 to squeeze every ounce of power out of that whore.

It is and has been done, even with USDM IM.

Fastest auto still has an intake :russ:

He already has it so, let it be, since the fastest auto still had MEVI when running 14.3's.

Honestly, the thing that pisses me off the most is that it shifts a good 400-650RPM before redline even when pushed. I haven't heard good things about the resistor method, and don't want to severely shorten the life of the tranny.

Right now I'm running stock sawblades with the 17's in the closet. So should I just leave them on and get decent tires? I think I'll look into the SAFC, I didn't even think of that.

You've no idea until you race bro. Just race and tell us how it went - GOOD LUCK! :doublethu

Do what I do, shift manually through 1st, 2nd and 3rd. You'll be able to bring it right to redline that way. Just make sure you know how much your transmission lags, because there's a delay from when you move the shifter into "2" and when the tranny actually shifts. There's an extra few tenths right there.

NismoMaxman2 01-09-2006 02:45 PM

Good luck, in my opinion, your gonna have to be there at the right day, at the right time... I'm auto: headers, 2.5 inch full exhaust, udp, vb mod, CAI, Fixed Knock Sensor, Egr blocked off, Lots of weight reduction, PF TB, TS ECU, LSD and my best time was 14.8 . I recently went to the track this week, my best for this past weekend was 15.3 and that was out of 4 passes, worst was 15.6 . Maybe its my engine, its close to 190,000miles, or maybe it was the weather, I cant say. But Light weight rims would help, pratically anything that can enhance your perfomance would help. Good luck on auto...

Lose weight, find a new bottom half of the airbox, get a K&N panel filter, and get good gripping tires. My $0.02 :mardi:

NmexMAX 01-09-2006 02:49 PM

Well, in any VI equipped A32, shifting at redline is very crucial to shaving time.. :jeffy:

This should be a no brainer with a VI'd Maxima.

Pick a good, cool, low humidity evening.

That is what I currently do. It does work, but I'm afraid of what may happen if I do this too often.

Also, My car is a GXE, so it is pretty light without spare, passengers, extensive power options, heavy stereo equipment, etc... I think some of this may be attributed to the modded autos with mid 15 passes (such as the one mentioned by nismo maxman).

NmexMAX 01-09-2006 03:00 PM

Don't be afraid of shifting like that...

My tranny has lasted a while, and I beat the holy hell out of it, granted it's on its way out now, but hell, I don't blame it...

and how much mileage have you put on it?

NmexMAX 01-09-2006 03:05 PM

5 years, 146k...

It has 233k on it though, but 146k were me being 18-24 y/o.
