High Pitched Whistle?? help!
High Pitched Whistle?? help!
hey guys. well i noticed this high pitched whistle/whine the other night coming home. its a 5 speed. when it happens it stays in tune with the engine and its only noticeable at like 3,500rpms and up. or if you let it wind down from like 4k. It sounds like when you have the air on and there is that whistle coming from the motor. the car has been running fine.
since its in tune with the engine speed i thought tranny. but the tranny was recently rebuilt like last year and also had a spec stage 1 clutch installed.
can anyone shed some light on this or point me in the right direction?
thanks
Sean

Check by turning off all accessories. Like turn off your stereo and see if it still happens. See if it gets louder if your lights are on too. That way you know if the problem has to do with some sort of draw from your battery.
It could be an alternator whine. Do you have the stock head unit?
When I put in an aftermarket head unit (rather cheap) I later developed an alternator whine, It was in sink with the rpms. I'd push the clutch in and the noise would go away, come back as rpms rise.

you'll need a suppressor to get rid of the whine. I cant explain better than, as I dont know too much about it.I was told that from an audio shop about mine, I ended up selling the head unit and screen, and went back to stock.
I know if your alternator is acting up/dying/starting to die/ any type of change to it could cause the whine. I wouldnt get worried thinking your alternator is going to die, but try cleaning the battery terminals, terminals on the alty and see if that helps.

I have a similar whine on my I30, except that I know it is not electrical, but maybe is coming from the Alternator or Belt tensioner pulley. I thought it was the tranny as well, but it will do it when in Park as well if I slowly pull the accelerator open. It really sounds like a bad bearing in either pulley. This might be the same situation for you. I really need to get an automotive s***hoscope to verify, but its something to look at. Good luck.
