Crappy auto

I have a 98 se auto with only 58k on it. When im rollin up to a redlight, and before i come to a full stop, say im rolling at about 5mph, the light turns green, so I step on the gas to go and the car doesnt move. so I push on the gas a lil more and I can feel the tranny downshift to first and the i begin to move. I think my tranny is auto tranny is crappy, or is this jus a small issue that can be fixed easily? Besides that the tranny is great it handles post 5k rpm shifts well. What could be wrong? Should I jus do a 5speed swap lol?

I doubt there's anything wrong with your tranny. If you dont come to a full stop the tranny stays in 2nd and when you press the gas gently from a roll it takes longer for it to accelerate because its in second. As you said, when you give it more gas the tranny downshifts to 1st. Those are all normal things. The only thing is if you're rolling at 5mph and you step on the gas gently and nothing happens then there is certainly a problem.

From the symptoms, it just sounds like it is in too high a gear to accelerate up the hill. In that situation, it's probably trying to accelerate in 4th gear, can't do it, and is forced to dropped to a lower gear. My car will do the same thing.

Such is the nature of the automatic transmission. It's can't predict what the conditions ahead will bring.

What you are experiencing is the normal behavior of the tranny. There is a huge lag in downshifting to first if you are rolling (in 2nd) and punch it.

Yeah I have the same problem with mine. Nothing too big to worry about. It jsut the auto sucks. Eventually I'm swapping mine out so it won't matter too long.

I have the same issue also. my friend has a 99 i30t and had the problem also, all he did was buy a case of tranny fluid and flush it over and over again( he only had 24k on it so im not sure about 50-60) and its fine now. mine has 111k and still drives awesome except for that crappy hesitation. Also if you drive alot of stop and go traffic on the highway, this can be an issue sometimes. I originally thought my tranny was going, got it looked at 4 places and its fine. dont worry about it dude
