Dash lights on, car stalls out, that means the ALTERNATOR

I was driving down the road today and all of a sudden I lose power steering, my car shuts off, and the dash lights (battery, air bags, ect.) come on. I know it's my alternator and I'm going to AutoZone to get it checked. My battery is only 1.5 years old. I have a subwoofer as well as a tv screen with Playstation 2. I can still drive the car, but twice today it stalled out.

How much does an alternator cost and where can I get one?

How hard is it to install?

I GOT A MAXIMA MEET ON SATURDAY!

Thanks, Aaron

Niiiiice, thanks for the information. Looks like I will be going to AutoZone tomorrow to pick one up. Should I get a high output alternator or something like that?

Nope - I would stick to a standard alt. Also have them bench test it before taking it home... the aftermarket alts tend to be hit or miss... (plan on using that lifetime warranty )

I got my battery and alternator checked at AdvanceAuto. Both were fine. Then I went to AutoZone and the guy there didn't even check them but asked me what my problem was. He said it's probably not your recharging system. But explained to me what it could be and he said a bad fuel filter. My check engine light was on for a reason such as bad fuel delivery. I think I need to look into fuel filters now. My idle has been dropping to 500 rpms every once in a while.
