Brand new OEM Alternator BAD!

Went to RS Strauss to had it load tested. There diode light was on, and some other green light was on consistently and bright green. He showed me, and I verified it. His manual clearly stated, the diode light SHOULD NOT be on, and whatever green light it was should not be bright and consistent. I can't believe this, even Nissan OEM alty's are crap.

Why did you get it tested... were you having problems after installing it?

Green to me indicates ok... but I didn't design the test equipment perhaps take it autozone and get a second opinion.

Ya - my input was already stated. 1. Why did you decide to test it, 2. Why not get it tested somewhere else just to be sure.

Most of the guys at the parts stores aren't the brighest-bunch..eh?

I just got it in, I tested it to make sure it was good, I will get it tested out again. Why is it a bad idea to test a new alternator berfore installing it?

Actually it's a very smart thing to do. I wasn't questioning your decision to test it, but was curious as to what made you think of doing it - i.e did you notice something about it that made you question it's quality, etc.. etc... I recommend EVERYONE who buys a starter/alternater etc. from a parts store, have it bench tested even before you get it home...

So why not just take the alternator back to Nissan and get it replaced? I dont think its a shocker that someone will eventually get a DOA product from a company. Think of how many they make, at least a few have got to be bad or have problems. You were just the lucky winnar.

I will have it tested again at Autozone, I am a bit skeptical as I have dealt with many bad alternators, but this is my FIRST OEM alternator.

Any one else have any ideas or input? The manual did state if the diode light is on it's "defective".

Just got it checked out by 2 autozones, what idiots , but it passed their Diode, Regulator, and rectifier test. What's a rectifier?

The rectifier is what converts the AC output of the alternator into DC.

The diodes are actually a part of the rectification circuit. The voltage regulator is what keeps the total output in check (regulated) - so that none of your cars electrical or electronic systems get blown out in case of spikes etc.
