cleaned tb and iacv....what's the residue?

Well Today I set out to clean my throttle body and my IACV and was able to clean both; however, I noticed when I took off the IACV that inside the opening when you pull off the IACV thqt leads to the engine there was a dark grainy residue all over inside, I am guessing since previous owner installed a worthless injen cai there is a possible leak in one of the seals and it is or was pulling in dirt and grime or is this normal. help me out because I am quite confused as to what this could be and am guessing it is probably tearing the crap out of my motor.

Doesn't sound good. I don't think that is a good thing to have anything grainy anywhere in your engine. Have a Stillen Ram kit makes me wonder what mine looks like. Think I know what I'm doing this weekend. I'll keep you posted on what's inside.

Are you sure it's not just normal gunk (oil vapors, exhaust gases, etc.) that get recirculated into the intake).

Found the same when I clean my TB and IACV. I managed to clean alot of it out, and use a modified wet/dry vac to suck the remainder out, but it was unnecessary. My mechanic told me it was just unburned fuel deposits and whatnot (what njmodi said), and they will burn before they ever get to the injectors, and its nothing to worry about. Won't clog anything. Nonetheless, it should still be cleaned as good as possible because becasue it still restricts airflow.

I'm not sure which is why I asked the question, a picture with my digital would not have shown anything I didn't already explain. Is it possible for normal buildup to accumulate inside there? If so what would the build up be?

Yes - it's normal for some build-up - but I'm not sure what your build-up looks like Thats the point of cleaning out the TB and IACV - so that you can remove all that grime.

Treatments like seafoam help clean out the intake and combustion chamber (see fluids and lubricants forum).

Its normal...Its most likely from the EGR (emissions stuff) basically it burns excess oil vapors gas, etc...

the dark gunky looking stuff is just carbon build up, it is normal for all cars, dont worry about it...

but, if you are worried about it, do a compression test to make sure

In the Hayes manual it says to replace the IACV gasket when you fool with it. Any opinion from anyone?

you could buy gasket maker for ~$5. take off your TB and give it a good clean, and make a gasket for both.

The residue is normal. Notice the rubber hose that goes from the front valve cover to the resonator? Thats part of it right there. Have an oiled air filter? Thats part of it right there. Egr is right next to iacv... This is the biggest part right there. Here is the build up I cleaned out of my intake manifold around the egr hole:

i had a lot of residue in mine, but not that much. it's nothing to worry about, but good that you cleaned it. Especially with that massive obstruction.

Well, it didnt really matter because I did this while I was installing my mevi so a whole new intake manifold went on anyways. I just wanted to clean the egr crap out of the old one so I could roll it up and take a pic for you guys. There was so much egr crap that the egr tube was almost blocked all the way.

I put a small filter on the breather tube that comes off the head. This way none of that crap gets in mine. I plugged up the whole on the intake. I have been running this way for years. Just make sure you hook it back up when you smog.

The egr tube is connected on the back of the intake manifold on the right hand side. It has two bolts and a gasket. The tube runs down to the rear exhaust manifold where it is connected with two bolts and a gasket. Cleaning the egr hole on the intake manifold would is practically impossible with out removing the intake manifold. I mean how would you get the resin ***** out? You can however remove the egr tube and then clean that out with a wire brush... Thats what I did and about half my residue ball on my work bench is from the egr tube alone. Seeing that it was almost completely clogged, I would not be suprised if once it got completely blocked up that a code or two would be tripped.

When I was installing my mevi I told my friend that I would give him $20 if he loaded that egr resin ball in his weed pipe and took just one big hit... he told me to go fucc myself.

Is there any performance loss if this gets plugged up?

no, its not carbon build-up. It is oil/fuel deposits. This is all on the intake side . . . carbon is a by-product produced from the combustion, so you would only find carbon deposits on the pistons/heads, or anywhere in the exhaust. It wont damage the engine, but it will take away from the performance because it still obstructs airflow, so its not good.

If anything, you will run better with the egr pluged up. How well do you think exhaust gas is going to combust in your engine? The only bad thing is you could get a CEL which is bad for emissions checks.
