What is your full tank mileage as soon as the light goes on, not after, not running on fumes. As soon as light appears, usually just over 16 gallons. So how many miles do you drive on 16 gallons? State mostly city, 50/50, or mostly highway driving, thanks.

 

This is pointless because the light trigger varies highly from one car to another.

Also, that is a very inaccurate way to measure mpg.

 

16 gallons x's about 25mpg = about 400 miles...

I never let it go that far.. I usually fill up at 1/4 tank cause of boost.

Its pretty acurrate if he's saying its 16 gallons...right ??

It does not appear that the light comes on on my 96. I have put a little over 16 gallons in it just to see if it would come on, but so far it hasn't. I usually don't run it that low.

 

Already did mileage 300 miles 16 gallons, all city mostly, 19 miles a gallon. Why would your light not come on at 16 gallons....hill/incline? Mine always does,96 I30t, barely over 16 every time the light comes on. 300 seems good for stop and go,what do you guys get?

 

For most people the light indicating just about 16 gallons will not work. In my case, it turns on a off when its near empty.

 

Not pointless just giving everyone an idea when 16 gallons is used, try it on level ground, we all have the same gas tanks right. Not inaccuate, whats better than miles driven divided by gallons used. Please tell me I like to know it seems you think you got all the answers.

 

Might be something wrong, should give you atleast a gallon or two for reserve. If your not level it won't work either, or give you false light on/off.

 

Don't let your fuel go below a 1/4 tank, the fuel pump would be in danger. I get about 20 mpg all city.

 

Exactly. BTW, I think that while that method isn't accurate for calculating MPG, it's an accurate measure of the lack of math skills in this country.

I get 24mpg on 93 octane doing 50/50 town/highway.

That's a very inconsistent way to figure on 16 gallons. I'd bet it could vary by a gallon each way.

A better way to do it is to simply fill the tank to the top (until the pump clicks off) and read the gallons off the gas pump.

The best way is to do it several times in a row, ideally filling with the same exact gas pump every time. Average them all and you'll get the most accurate number possible.

I have a 95GXE. Can somebody else with the same year and model verify that indeed the gas light will come on?

my fuel light comes on @ about 14.5 gallons...still plenty of fuel left if u ask me

he's probably saying that he has filled up with 15 gallons, and at that time he had gotten 300 miles to the previous tank... it makes a lot more sense than your method, my gas light sometimes comes on when i have 3 or 4 gallons left.

 

my drive computer gives me all that info, though sometimes it is way off. IN my car I get about 240-300 miles a tank. my warning light comes on when it senses about 2 gallons is left in the car. I know mine is 2nd gen, but my light comes on when i am almost empty, never heard of a full light. if you are getting 20mpg in a 4th gen, there is something wrong, unless you are boosted, or have a lead foot.

 

Miles driven divided by gallons used is the only way I know, tell me another.

what we're saying is that "light comes on = 16 gallons" isn't always true, and it doesn't MATTER how much you've driven when the light comes on, because the light varies from car to car.

not really. here at school, i do ALL stop and go driving, mostly 5-10 minute trips, and if it's any more than that it's because half the time is spent idling. i get MAYBE 17 or 18 mpg. maybe worse.

on the highway (driving home or to visit friends or whatever) i get about what i always have, 24-26 mpg.

at home, city driving (but longer trips, less idling, longer stretches of open road) i get 21-22.

i know there's nothing wrong with my car, so that goes to show that really bad driving conditions can have a big effect on gas mileage.

i beg to differ. for one the EPA estimate is 20mpg on a 95, which i understand is a conservative estimate, driving like an old fart.

ppl say they get 25 mpgs city, which i find very very hard to believe.

im usually at 20, +/- 2.

Just got my '95 Max. First tank had 150 highway the rest spirited driving by my wife and myself. Second tank I had the flu and didn't touch the car, my wife used it half higway half city and got 26.5mpg. Thats running the tank down refilling then doing the math based on added gas. 406 miles on 15.32 gallons. I haven't seen a light come on yet.

 

I filled up 2 days ago when the needle was almost all the way down (no light yet though) and the trip odometer showed 260 miles since last fill up.... doesnt sound good. What should I do to fix the problem?
