Manual Tranny Leak!

Doing the usual weekly under-hood check-up, I saw this:

Looking closer into it, there is tranny fluid seeping thru a section where the red arrow is at. I wen't to the dealer today and that black round part with a cable hanging out from it is the manual tranny position switch. Cost = $70! I am going to replace this part tomorrow with the new one that I got from Glendale Nissan. However, I'd like to know if any of you guys have experienced this before. I thought that maybe, I can re-seat the old one in there and seal the surrounding areas with RTV high temp sealant.

Any input is welcome.

You're dealer's jacking you. I got one for $35 from www.worldpartsexpress.com. But I guess you're in a hurry to replace it, so it's not a bad thing to buy local.

Anyway, it's REALLY easy to crack these things when you use them to drain the oil. They are very brittle and unless you use a real knifelike tool and lift them out gradually.

When I pulled this thing out and carefully inspected it, I did not see any visible cracks. I did notice that the rubber "O" ring is flattened out. My buddy has a bunch of different rubber "O" rings at his shop all for tranny applications. I put a new ring in and voila.......no more leak!!! I haven't opened the package that I bought from the dealer yet so I am going to return it on Monday. That rubber "O" ring saved me $70!

I have that leak as well. A thicker ring did the job?

Yep.......so far so good. Just looked at it again and still no leak. Just make sure that the plastic ring isn't cracked because if it is changing the rubber ring won't do any good, it'll still leak.
