front end work in my future?

here are my symptoms:
When I am slowing down, my steering wheel shimmies back and forth, as if something is warped. it does NOT get worse when i hit the brakes so i dont believe that is warped rotors or anything like that. Also, when I hit bumps I sometimes feel secondary feedback (for a lack of a better term) through the steering while, almost like something up front is loose and the rattle is being transmitted through the steering column.

I lowered tha car last April with illuminas/ hr's. the actual ride is great. It's just that the steering has some issues.

I went to my mechanic today but he did not have time to look at it today so I am going back in the morning. Just wanted to see what you guys thought it might be. Before I left, he said that it could be a few things....lower control arm, bushings, ball joints - which he belives I shoudl switch to urethane. (He also has a 97 max lowered and said that he needed to swithc to urehtane bushings.
also, could somebody list what a mechanic should charge for this type of work depending on the parts needed? thanks!

Rotational problems aren't usually associated with bushings or ball joints. Check your wheels and tires. An easy test is to rotate front to back and see if the problem continues. You can do that yourself (cost =$0.00).
That would be the first thing I'd do.

Hey Tom,
I just got back from my mechanic. Turns out the suspensin componenets are in good repair. The drivers side tie bar is slightly loose. Nothing crazy though. he said I could get it done later as I unexpectedly had to replace 2 belts that were cracked. He showed me that all my wheels and tires to some degree, all seem to roll like eggs. they all seem to go up and down when they spin. almost like a ripple effect. He said that thats what I most likey feeling. He said that balancing will not take care of this b/c the rubber itself is mishaped. SO, I guess I will kill 2 birds with one stone adn get the 17 inch 02-03 SE rims, for an upgradeand get them with tires. and replace the tires next year or whenever theygo bad. What do you think? Is this true about the tires being "mishaped"?

That makes sense, get a nice set of wheels and tires or just put some new rubber on your rims and I'm sure you should be fine.
