Auto Transmission diagnostic help.

Hi. Haven't been on here since my 97 5 spd, but I do have a couple questions about my sister's 97 Auto.

The low and skinny:
CEL light was on, code pulled was

p0744 Torque Converter Clutch Circuit Intermittent

When Driving:
Low speed = shifts slowly and at very high rpm point. (light throttle shifts at 3.5k-5.5k depending on op temprature)

Freeway speeds at 70+mph, rpm's are about 3500-4000, at 80 Mph rpm's are at 4000-4500. Transmission feels like it's in a constant slip.

When I release the throttle to coast, regardless of the speed, the engine drops back to nuetral or to an almost stall (400-800 rpm). When I reapply gas, the engine "rev matches" back to to the origional speed.

Oh, the Fluid also smells burnt.

Does anyone have any idea what this could be? I want to fix it, but don't want to tear apart the transmission until have a better idea about what's wrong.

Thanks in advance.

with the symptom it is def.ly slipping/tork converter not locking up.
I am new to the maxima but most auto tranny with a lock up converter is controlled by a lock up solinoid.

I suspect you are looking at a major rebuild or replacement. Go to car-part.com and fill in the blanks. I found 175 listing for a 100 miles radius of my house in east Tenn for auto trans ranging from $275 to $750.

Better to get a new (used) trans then waste money on rebuilding IMO.

I say rebuild it, wouldnt it be better than putting in another used tranny which has no guarantee and could go bad.
