E-brake not releasing
E-brake not releasing
Ever since its gotten cold out my e-brake sticks in the mornings or when the car is cold. I have to get underneath with a hammer and tap the lever on the calipers back out to release. Is this a sign of the cables going bad or do I just need some grease/WD-40 on the caliper springs?
Sounds like you could have a sticky ebrake cable or caliper. You are going to have to disconnect the cables to test. Disconnect the cables and test each cable. I had this and one cable was stuck. The other cable was much smoother. It's a pain because either way the calpiers are $$$ and so are the cables. Good Luck!! BTW, I replaced my passenger side cable.
You likely have seized parking brake cables. The only fix is to replace the damaged cables. The run about 60 bucks a side.
See www.motorvate.ca for more info on why the cable can go bad.

The detail I intentionally left out... I just had my calipers/pads/rear rotors replaced. I was hoping I could go back to the shop to have them fix this issue. I was afraid I would come away with the explanation that my cables are going bad. Are the cables a dealer only item?
Guys that are parting out cars check with them and make them test them so your sure they work try using wd-40 first. I had a sticky passenger one but I used wd-40 and it fixed it it sticks everynow and then but when i back up it pops
I just had a rear brake job done to my 95 the other day and when the car was in the air my nissan mechanic and I looked at the brake cable and it was frayed like something was rubbing on it. He said that this happens when someone does not put the hydrolic lift that are in shops in the right place underneath the car. The piece that lifts the car up eats away at the cable and will eventually rub it enough that rust will adhere to it. Thats why on 5th gen maximas you will see a protective guard next to the cable for that very reason. Check that first, mine was on my passenger side..not saying that this is what is happening to yours but just a thought.

I had the same problem also which ended up turning into a nightmare. My friend owns a shop so i brought the car in the for the first time and he told me one of my calipers were frozen so he replaced it. That didn't fix after spending $200 for the caliper. So i was already pissed. I brought it back again and he told me it was the other caliper. So he replaced the other one for another $200. It still didn't work. I flipped out on him and he finally replaced the cables which fixed the problem. He also refunded my $400 so I made out with 2 new rear calipers.

Go back to the shop first, make them fix it. They were functioning fine before you went there. Also if you hve them replace it, they should charge less for repeat business.
