Possible that some 99's have 2K 5spd. transmissions?

My manual trans. went bad a while ago and I had a shop swap a transmission that I got from carpart.com out of a '99. My stock shifter lays almost straight back now in 2nd, 3rd, and R. I can't even put a drink in my front cupholder now. In 1st and 3rd my shifter sits almost straight up and down. I have read here on the .org that 2K-2K2 trannies that are swapped into a 4th gen make the shifter sit like this. Is it possible that I have a 5th gen transmission? If not why does my shifter sit so much differently than it did before? I have a '98.

i think it's more likely that the junkyard you got the tranny from put down the wrong year for the car.

If this is the only problem, you could have a shop cut and weld the shifter arm tubing under the car until it's aligned properly again.

But I have to wonder: if the shifter (moving) beam is too long, how did you bolt up the shifter bracing arm?

The 2000-2001 transmission makes the shifter sit further FORWARD not back, so you definately don't have a 00-01 transmission in there.

my 2000 transmission made my shifter sit further back, and i've heard of other people having the same experience at least a dozen times on here.

lol you are right I was mixing up my thinking. I have a 2001 transmission in my 4th gen but for some reason I was thinking it was moved the other way - I must have been thinking about a thread a couple weeks ago about using a 4th gen trans in a 5th gen car (that is what would move the shifter forward). I haven't driven that car since november so I wasn't thinking right. Disregard my first post.

I guess it isn't that big of a deal. The minor inconvenience of having the shifter lay back so far is much better than what I dealt with when I had my old tranny; ie leaking gear oil like crazy and making lots of noise.

I'm not a big fan of them, but if you want to get an STS, they typically move the shifter forward. I have an STS and 2k1 transmission in my 95, the 2k1 trans moves the shifter back, and the STS moves it forward, so it sits in about exactly the same place as it would completely stock.

Would there be a VIN on the transmission?...or any other number? I didn't notice one when I was hauling it up to the shop to get installed. That could answer my question definitely. I just don't want to go outside in the freezing cold and put the car up on ramps looking for numbers that maybe aren't even there.

Here are some pics of 1st and 2nd gear in my car.

1st gear:

2nd gear:

As you would probably guess, neutral sits in between those two positions. Where 1st gear sits now is about where neutral was before the transmission swap. I looked briefly at the transmission for numbers and from the top looking down in the hood I couldn't see any. Anybody know if there are any sort of identification number or vin stamped on these trannies somewhere?

There is a vin on my 2001 trans but my pic hosting site is down right now so I can't post it. I don't recall exactly where on the case it is. I am thinking it was on the rear part, facing up, closest to where the driver sits.

Yep I just saw the pic on my computer (still can't post it) but that is where the vin plate is. If you consider the clutch fork to be sitting at like 10 or 11 o'clock position, , the starter at the 12 o'clock position, the vin plate is at like the 2 o'clock position. It's right above where the speed sensor plugs in.

Nealoc if you get a chance will you post that picture when your hosting site comes back up. Isn't the speed sensor at the bottom-most part of the tranny? If it wasn't dark I would check it again. You think I would have a better chance of seeing it looking down from the hood or underneath with the car on ramps? Since I didn't do the swap I cant picture exactly how everything mounts up without looking at it.

You won't be able to see it looking from the bottom. You will have to look down from the top. The speed sensor is on the top of the trans (back by where the diff sits, behind the bell housing, above where the axles go into the trans). The reverse sensor is on the bottom of the trans that's probably what you are thinking of on the bottom.

I can send you the pics if you want, give me your email.
