shark fin antennas come on bmw's and such....they look like a fin....if you wanted to install one, you'd need to redirect your antenna wire and shave your old antenna's old otherwise you'd have an ugly hole in the side of your car.....has anyone ever just replaced their old antenna with a smaller one in the same location?

and how does that work reception wise? how about in tunnels, under bridges or in heavy wooded area as opposed to having the antenna up?

for example, do you notice that where you used to have good reception it now sucks?

They are usually active antennae which mean they have a low/noise detector circuit inside. The output to the radio is amplified.

I'm either gonna put a small antenna or just cut power to the motor in the stock one. I tried already but couldnt figure out how to make the antenna stay down. How did it?

Just disconnect the B/R wire at the antenna. It should retract the mast.

The B/R wire at the antenna is the antenna signal from the HU. Disconnecting it will keep the antenna down.

I disconnected my antenna so it doesn't go down. It used to stay down all by itself and my radio reception was terrible. I pulled it up manually, disconnected the wire (you can disconnect it -- don't just cut it), and have been enjoying better reception ever since (ever since it was stuck down, that is). If you ever listen to the radio, I would recommend against making a permanently retracted antenna.

Is it the really thin red wire with the black stripe? If so how do you pull it out? My only thought was cutting the wire. If you've cut the wire or whatnot, is the reception real bad? There seems to be mixed reviews on this thread....
