3.5

Ok I know that a 3.5 is better then a 3.0, but does it really make that much of a differance?
Is it a direct fit?
Where could you get one, if it is that big of a deal?
Does the stock 3.o tranny, accessories, radiator, and all that good stuff fit?
Thanks in advance

get ready for some flaming.

yes and no, it fits, but some modifications will have to be made for it to WORK.
junkyard, or www.car-part.com
yes, all the accessories fit.

we have an all motor forum for this kind of stuff, dont post until you look around in there, or search first.

you need to take a trip to the all motor section, all the information is sticked in there. . .

but in short. . .

3.5 makes more power than the 3.0
Direct fit (in terms of motor mounts)
stock tranny will bolt up (MT. . . AT I dont know nor do I think so)
radiator will be fine
accessories should be fine also.
if your MT, clutch upgrade will be needed.

You can buy a pre-prepped engine from tilley if you dont want to have to deal with swapping sensors, etc. You'd just have to wire up the injectors, and a few other minor things and you're ready to go (after clutch upgrade).

When I drove the car stock I had no idea what torque steer was. Now I do.

Over a full second quicker and over 10 MPH faster on the trap speed... on the same wheels and tires.

Stock;
1/4: 15.00
MPH: 92

VQ35 H/I/E;
1/4: 13.68
MPH: 105

Sawblades and all-seasons on both runs.

I thought the Vq 3.5 was lighter. . . just by little bit. But with an upgrade to the motor mounts, shouldnt be a problem at all.

According to an article I've read the 3.5 is 35 pounds lighter than the 3.0. Me and my bro picked it up with no oil or accessories on it. Never actually weighted it but from what I've read 3.0 is in the mid-200 area while the 3.5 is in the low 200 area.

2Da Max was being extremely sarcastic.......and JClaw the headers and y-pipe make quite a bit of differnece in power ...but i still think the 3.5 is considerably faster in stock form

dammit I second that, I'd rather get a 3.5 than a turbo or supercharger though. What about exhaust how does regular 3.0 sit with the 3.5?..

The 3.5 is quite the powerplant. I drive my 98 Max 5-speed every day and think it is pretty fast.... until I drive my wife's 02 altima 3.5 5-speed.
Holy **** that car is fast.(0-60 in 5.9 sec) My Max can not even keep up (0-60 about 7.0 sec). The altima will run circles around it. The altima pulls like crazy (at any RPM), and gets 30 mpg on the highway and 24-25 in the city. No freakin comparison. 3.5 rules. I still love my 98 Max. She is my baby (175,000 miles, you can't even tell she is running at idle, plus gets 30 mpg highway). The moral of the story is the 3.5L is a beast.

There is my $0.02.

VQ35 is lighter, any more info go to the all motor forum and read the stickies. As for me, it's simpler to do a VQ30DE-K swap + VLSD, then add an intake, headers, and exhaust system. That's all I need.

as tempting as the 3.5L swap sounds, i'm thinking gas mileage would decrease after the swap, since you are using a bigger engine.

Thats how I feel as well. I think the VQ30DE-K is the most refined engine that nissan has ever made. I like the fitment of the DEK motor in the 4th gen. Its exaclty whats suppose to be in there, and wayy more refined then the DE ever is.

I have a DEK the way to my house with ONLY 8,557 miles on it. Will be going on soon. New alternator, Shorty SS Autochrome Headers, 6 puck Centerforce Clutch, Motor Mounts.

That is a sound theory on paper, but in real life the 3.5 is straining much less to carry a 2900 lbs 4th gen around than 3200-3400 lbs 5.5 or 6th gens. The result is actually slightly better fuel economy in the city and very comparable to stock on the highway. Sort of like having more aggressive gear ratios.

I've pulled 450 miles on a 70/30 highway tank with the 3.5 and no cruise control. Not sure how much more I could have pulled but I just filled it up and ran it until the needle was on Empty. So I wasn't running on vapor.

the DE-K may be more refined, but dam the 3.5 has crazy amount of power when installed in a 4th gen.

I read the swap info in the all motor forum. Still sounds as if they need to work the bugs out. This is in regards to the ECU, Timing, and the fuel return. I hope someone will work on a solution for these things. This basically means there is a lot more power to open up.

VQ35 works with the auto trans reliably. I would however upgrade the valve body to at least a stage II.

i think he means that over the years Nissan refined it to perfection then they switched to the 3.5 which is still raw.....interm terms of the little things that add up like usuable power....idle issues....stupid failures that shouldbnt happend that got worked out.....smoothness of revs

The heck you talking about? a 3.5 into a 4th gen has potential of running 13's. the 3.5 is lighter more powerful and more torque. It weight 400lbs, I know I have one lying in my van right now getting prep to be dropped in. Back to the question...you should really check out the allmotors fourm...there's a sticky there engine and all that you can get from car-parts.com. It's lots of work but in the end it's worth it.

True, and to each his own. I decided on the DE-K based on the ease of the swap and that the only hurdle to it is the FI harness. Everything else pretty much bolts on. Then get a harlan switch or get a TS/JWT ecu.

On the VQ35 swap, there's way more work involved, mainly harness/wiring related, and getting the 4th gen ignition component to work in the VQ35.

with the dek, you want a summit switch, not the harlan, it is known for not opening the VI every time, but you are better off with a vafc II so you can control the vi, plus tune your car. JWT cannot control the vi.

The 3.5 swap doesn't have lots more wiring, its a bit more difficult, but you still have to solder new injector harnesses on just like a dek swap

Thanks for clarifying. After reading the 3.5 swap faq, I realized that its just way too much work for me IMO. Modding the fuel system, cams, tb, etc.

I almost did the swap, but backed out at the last minute. It really doesn't seem that hard after reading through pretty much every swap thread in the all motor forum. alot of work, but the torque
