I am looking into purchasing a 1995 or 96 Maxima GXE after recently turning in my 97 GLE at the end of its lease. The residual was too high on it, so I decided to buy another one without all the frills. I was wondering what problems I should be looking for on these years on a GXE. I am looking for something in the $10,000 range. Most seem to have about 70 or 80k miles on them.

Also, was it possible to get a GXE with a sunroof? I haven't seen any around.

According to the 96 Maxima brochure that I still have, GXE can have sunroof (or moonroof, don't remember exactly) as an option. In my company parking lot I saw a GXE (either 95 or 96 from the tail light) with a sunroof, but not sure if it's an after market one or not.

you should be able to find what you are looking for 10,000 should be plenty even if you wanted the frills of an se.. as for the gxe you can find them with factory sunroofs, as for problems i have read on this board that 95 maxima is notorious for bad starters but thats just what i have read. i just bought a 95 se 5spd leather sunroof, with 70k for 7700 so with 10 grand to spend you will surely find what you want..good luck, louis

I have a 96 GXE with a sunroof. I bought it in the DC/Metro area and it wasnt too hard to find one.

As for the starter, I had mine replaced at 52,000 miles.

The pic isnt too great, but it's the only one I could find that shows my sunroof.

Good Luck.

The early 4th gens have an increased occurance of faulty starters and fualty oxygen sensors. Otherwise, they are very dependable. I am still on my original oxygen sensors and starter however, no problems.

I see many people posting about a knock sensor code. I've replaced the sensor on mines and the code haven't come up again. The mil will not light up for this code. You have to do a self diagnosis. Most people see this code after some other problem lit up the mil.

I have also replaced the crank sensor, althogh I haven't heard about it much from other members on this board. The sympthom was a hard starting problem. The engine cranks at normal speed but it will not fire up because there is no spark.

If you go to www.cars.com it is a good place to look. As well because we have been looking for a 1995-1996 Maxima SE for the last several weeks we got a 2 month carfax account let me know if you need a vin number ran, send me an email with vin number.

We ended up buying a 1996 SE for less than $8K with 75K miles on it. Real nice car, it just needs a driver side fog light to be perfect. Of course it also needs all of our stuff we sell as well, should have all of it on this weekend. We will be doing photos of the retrofit of adding a lined flex section to a Y pipe plus fitting our new non mandrel bent Y pipe for the gen 4. We finally have some of our CAI's back from powdercoat and will be adding it as well.

Yes, the 95's are known for being the fastest of the 4th gen maxima. you can find an SE loaded for 10 K just look a little bit. you'll be much happier with an SE than with a GXE.
