do ground wires really help???

I bought those ground wires that hook up to your negative on the battery and you bolt them to the fender, firewall, block ,throttle body and other places and its susposed to increase spark and give better electrical current and reduce static in radio and better gas mileage bla bla bla and acceleration......really just look like a spider with long *** legs and speaker wire gone mad! does it really work ?????thanks

I have the Stillen grounding kit and it effectively does its job and grounds you providing for a slighty smoother idle and smoother acceleration, but its supposedly more noticable in autos IMO.

Instead of buying a kit, can't you make your own?

I've seen some on Stillen's and VQPower's website, Ebay also have some, but I was thinking about making my own b/c it's cheaper!

It does help the auto in my opinion. Most notably the infuriating times when you almost come to a stop and take off again where it doesn't change down.

Grounding doesn't help as much as everyone says it does, but it does help. Electricity runs from high to low but if you don't have enough low it can't flow as freely, adding more grounds creates more low, therefore increasing the flow. (I was a poet and didn't even know it)

Some components have their own ground but generally speaking there is only one ground from the battery to the body of the car. One ground for all those components is crappy. I'll probably do some grounding to starter and tranny when the weather get's better.

I just bought some 4 gauge wire from a lighting store and some gold plated terminals. It came out to $12. Didn't really feel too much of a difference. More of a placebo effect.

I have a Blehmco kit and it did absolutely nothing. But I have to believe that grounding can/may work because once I grounded my transmission and starter (not per Blemco's instructions but per crazy97's awesome thread http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?t=452286 ) my extremely hard-starting car starts up fine every time.

The new thing now are the grounding kits with voltage regulators. I'm going to look into that.

I find that running a direct wire from the MAF sensor ground wire to the negative terminal of the battery made some difference to the smoothness of my car.

A simple ground to the starter can do wonders!

I wouldn't recommend any wire thinner than 10ga.

I'll be checking that out, I've also heard about upgrading the alternator ground wire. I just got 15 ft of 8 gage in the mail from ebay, so I'll be doing some upgrading tonight.

Unless you have a massive car stereo drawing major amperage, the stock ground wires are just as good IF THEY ARE IN GOOD CONDITION. Stock ground simply need to be unbolted and checked for rust or corrosion getting in the way of the connections. Usually a metal brush or sandpaper will easily get some bare metal to restore the connection.

The reason they claim it adds hp and improves fuel economy is because they install the grounds on a car that either had missing stock grounds (due to incompetent work by a previous mechanic or owner), or damaged grounds. Replacing with stock grounds would have identically restored the hp and fuel economy. I would only buy the aftermarket grounds if they are less expensive than stock pieces and your stock pieces are rusting thru, and if that's the case the absolute best solution is some amp wire from the local car stereo shop. You can redo a load of stock grounds for under $25.
