Tiley could give you a very good idea, as he's done it I believe twice on a 4th gen (I think one without the 3.5 in it).

Arguably, I feel there would be extra drivetrain loss due to the 6MT vs 5MT. But maybe not that noticable, and Lately when looking at my RPMs when driving I felt like shifting when I was 5th 70mph/ 3.4k, but quickly realized I had no 6th gear

modification is needed, what specifically I'm not sure. As for axles, I dont think they match up, with the power that goes thru the tranny I would assume a beefier axle is built and used.

A while ago someone made a good comment in swapping out your 5th gear. I cannot remember exactly or where I did read it BUT I THINK that the 3rd gen 5th gear is taller/longer and that if you swapped it into your transmission then it should drop your RPMs I believe roughly 250-350 RPMs in 5th while cruising (65-85) MPH. I cannot give you exact info, verify the info, or stand behind it ... just a thought

I also remember that the guy dropped the transmission and brought the new 5th gear into a shop and said, "Open the transmission and swap the gear". He paid $80 for the gear AND installation.

Good Luck searching

only $80, not bad at all. I remember little about swapping the Altima 1st gear for a little extra power. Definately something to keep in mind.

ya, swapping out 5th gear for a taller gear isn't that bad of an idea at all, since i think most of us use it just for highway cruising. do we have any other options other than the 3rd gen 5th gear? how about the 6th gear of the newer gens?

Any gear will work, BUT ... you want to becareful with your gear ratios.

5 speeds have SOME acceleration at low cruising speeds 4th.
In 5th gear, I am sure that if you floor it then you WILL accelerate, but not very fast.

If you swap to a very tall 6th gear then there will be a HUGE bog down between 4th and "5th". If someone can find the gear ratios of our 5th and the 3rd gen 5th then we can solve this issue. In the case that the 5th isn't tall enough then we should look at other gears

I am pretty sure our 5th is .73-.75 ........ the 6th of the later maxs are .63 I think. AGAIN this is all just on random remembering.

Pretty sure it was the altima 5th gear that people were swapping.

I'd love love LOVE a 6sp (and an 00vi or a 3.5) but it's a PITA as I hear, it does NOT bolt right up, has different mounts and also suffers from greater drivtrain loss, something to think about. I'd still really like one though.

FOUND IT
http://forums.maxima.org/showthread....light=5th+gear
Post 26

Anyway to sum it up:
4th gen 5th : .795
Some/all 3rd gen 5th and Altima/Stanza 5th : .74

Swapping in this gear will place you at 2790 RPMs at 75 MPH instead of 3000 RPMs.

Gear : $80
Labor : $50 ***ONLY IF you disassemble the transmission and take it to them open*** !!!

Enjoy and good luck

Alternatively you could plan ahead and increase the rolling radius of your tyre/wheel combination. Of course that would give you taller gearing on all the gears.

I think Tilley told me the biggest difference is that it's cable shifted, not by a striking rod. You'd need to swap/change/etc the whole shifter or adapt it somehow.

Call him and find out.
