brake pad shims -- do I really need them??

can't seem to find rear brake pad shims in stock anywhere. I want to do the brake job tomorrow so I'd rather not order them and wait 2 days. do i really need them? dealer said i don't, autozone guy said I don't, but then again do any of us trust these guys? thanks.

First of all, new brake pads usually come with shims, so I don't see why you'd need to order them. Second, you don't really need them, but I leave them in to help reduce brake squealing. I have removed them before, so if you want to do it without, I'd say go for it.

The shims are very helpful for stopping brake squeal, and making sure the pads move properly in the calipers. When you do the brake job, re-use the old ones unless they are corroded or broken. If so, order the shim set and install them.

if you don't have shim on your brakes it will rattle, clunk, and have wierd sounds, especially the rear brakes. it had happen to me before so just get those shims.
