top speed

I'll take a chance that this thread might get locked or flamed, but from reading the stickies, i thought these cars could go faster than 131 mph. but d@mn that's all I could muster with a 99 auto SE [on clear open 4 lane hwy with nobody in sight]. am wondering why the limit - thick GC oil? wind? KS kaput?
my '94 RX7 went ~167. totally different car I know. just thought the new max would at least be close. not so. but at least we don't have a damn rotary engine that gets 8 mpg and burns oil.

142mph on radar via MotorTrend back in '95 for the for the 5spd in their Top Speed Shootout. No idea about the auto but given the less aggressive gearing and less power to the wheels, it doesn't surprise me. Not sure why you thought it'd be anywhere close to your RX7, way less power overall, WAYYY less power up top, more weight (not that it affects top speed very much), probably worse aerodynamics and frontal area, etc, etc, etc.

Highest I've dared to go is 126 MPH (and gotten pics of it) but after that I slowed back down to normal speeds just to be safe...don't want a blowout at 130+, that would be interesting. Did cut 45 minutes out of my trip, though.

In my old 95 auto SE I was only able to get to 120 Once it shifts into fourth it feels like it's on cruise control, doesn't gain at all. Was going 120 for about 3 minutes, it just wouldn't go up. Back in 2000 I think it was I got it up to 140 though. Haven't tried with my 97 5spd yet, but I'm sure it wouldn't disappoint

I have a 95SE, 5-speed, and wound the needle off the end of the odometer almost 9 years ago in the middle of nowhere at 8:00 AM. I was going at least 142 mph, but never again!

I thought that some of the 95 gxe's was the only one's with the speed limiter. And their set at 115mph. Done check mine no limit here.

Autos should be able to break 130, but not by much. 5sp can break 140 stock, but again not by much. Fastest I've taken the max up to is 125 or so, and figured I'd rather not get arrested. I've gone 140+ in other cars before but decided to wise it out this time... at least for now. If I get a ypipe or 00vi sometime, I'm gonna have to test it... should make it to 150 or so.

Check the stickies. Ever wonder why there's an "overdrive off " button on the auto shifter? Its cause if you let the tranny shift at top speed, the engine will not have the torque to go much faster than 130 in 4th , thus the "cruise control" feeling....

TO save you the trip to the stickies, you lock out 4th gear by pressing the O/D off button, then make your run. Once you get to redline in third, press the O/D off button again, which tells the tranny to now shift into 4th. You should be able to clear 140 from there....

BTW,please do check this site before attempting this. http://www.speedtrap.org/

I'd be 125$ richer If I had LOL....

No, not that daring. Only about 10 or so, gentle acceleration up to 126 MPH. But given that my average speed was 55 for the majority of the trip, it did save me some time at the expense of a bit of fuel.

i've been over 141 in my car once couple years ago when i just got it and it was completely stock. BTW there were 4 ppl sitting in it as well. Never tried to go that fast again, but with current mods and in it by myself i thing it would go close to 150...

Where are all the cops in these stories? Over here they're cops every five miles on the highways.

I've actually never tried to top speed my max... not enough road, and too afraid that there would be cops around with no popo detector... not sure if there is even a track here for me to do that

I tried to max it out once. It got up to about 125 mph then seemed to die out. It went up so slow after that. At first I thought it had a rev limiter but then I remembered it's got almost no power after about 5600 rpms. Hopefully the 00VI swap fixes that problem.

I've only tried to make my car reach it's top speed once, and I had to slow down quickly because the front end was beginning to take flight.

Enough top speed threads.

It is best to avoid trees going 100+ mph... or 5 mph for that matter.

let's clear something up...top speed can only be acheived when there is minimal traffic if none at all. The road has to be a straight line(these aren't F1's) And NEVER go stupid fast with other ppl in the car. Imagine you survive, but they don't...plain stupid. Eitherway, when are we even able to reach those speeds on a daily basis anyway?? Are we asking to die? I have done it and will try it again once done with the mods( alone, middle of the night, straightaway) just to have a number. After that no more...I would say use a track, but they aren't accessible or none in the area. Guys, maximas are really nice cars. Especially when they're moded, but do they look as nice in a junkyard?? NO!! Anything can happen...tickets are the least of your problems

My car went above 140 completely stock....felt as if it had even more power and could keep going. I love my Max compared to my Altima...i traded a 2005 altima for a 99 max and it was WELL WORTH IT!!!

edit: unlike most of the ppl here i only go top speed when i'm alone in my car, it's one thing to risk your life....it's another to risk someone else's.

i agree trees are bad but most cocky kids think they can drive at 100 to show off to their buddies. problem is they learn the lesson too late and some pay the ultimate price. speed < life. am i exempt ? no but i have 227 hours of agressive professional defensive and offensive driving under my belt from a trained and a little crazy instructor. ive taken my modded 3rd gen 5 speed and pinned the 145 mph speedo. my trans am i pinned at 160. but ya wanna know where i did this ? at an oval track in a controlled enviornment. and man it was a blast. NO cops NO moms and kids in minivans to get in my way NO crap no cars nothing.....just pavment and my foot glued to the floor and hard as i could push it......

yea I've hit redline in 5th before and most of the ppl here in St. Pete and Tampa probably know that the bridges around here are pretty dead late at night and its nice.. stock max even with the SE suspension starts to waver quite a bit at those speeds. On the other hand I have Toyo T1's so im not really worried about blow outs. Anyways after going that and over 160 in the G35 speed doesnt really feel like much of anything anymore..

Like they said before, speed<life.

What A surprise! I would too .........Risk your life , and your life only. Just saw a post some days ago about some kid in New York crashing his MAx and killing himself. Check out his MySpace and see if you still think speeding with passengers is a good idea......

You know what guys ... take an old man's advice. A lot of you on here are young fellas and I was a maniac at 17 too. Actually I still am. But I lost several close friends in my teens due to them seeing how fast their cars / bikes could go. And one turned into a vegetable wit hbrain damage. So think twice before you indulge in that adrenalin rush, because that's what it is. Another drug.

My GXE is limited at about 118 or so. I only did that once during the middle of the night on the highway basically just to see if it had a governor or not. It felt like it was still pulling pretty decently then the ecu shut it down. Had it went past 120 I would have let off the gas myself. Going 140 in a 4th gen max is insane especially with a stock suspension. Better have good tires that are properly inflated too if you are going to try that and hope nothing darts in front of your like a deer or a dog or something.

ok you guys worry about blowouts too much. when they rate tires, for example: i believe (correct me if im wrong) that H rated tires are good for 130MPH. does that mean when you go 131 they blow out? how about 145? not likely. why? because when they speed test these tires, it is done with them at full load rating, and ran for its rating, like 130mph, for HOURS at a time, going 145mph for like 2 mins isnt something you really have to worry about, assuming your tires are inflated properly and not overloaded, and its not 110 degrees outside...

edit: im not saying you are paranoid about blowouts, you jsut mentioned it and it always comes up in these threads, so i felt like saying something

Points already made that I agree with:

Weight has no measurable effect on top speed; only how long it takes to get there.

Tires are speed rated at max load for 30 minutes without failure. Short bursts are nothing to worry about.

Driving triple digits on the street is a real bad idea. There are venues where you can do this legally. Seek them out if you must go fast.

If something runs in front of you while driving at high speeds, brake smoothly in a straight line. Do not swerve and maintain control of the vehicle.

And whoever said they chopped 45 minutes off a trip by driving at triple digit speeds is either superman, or exaggerating. I have averaged over 125 mph over 118 miles in an open road race, and while it was a relatively curvy road (60 turns or bends in 59 miles) this is a mentally tiring activity that on the street without safety gear is extremely foolish.

It is ok for you to decide to risk your own life; but under no circumstances do you have the right to make that choice for another person. Please think about this statement.

Be safe

Once I got a 13 passenger van I was driving with some of my coworkers in, up to 101 mph. It had more in it too. That is actually faster than I have driven my maxima.

120 in my auto, 135 in 5spd with alot more left to go. I'm scared of top speed in the maxima...gets a bit unstable.

exactly, stability becomes an issue above 120, I had a moment to talk to GOD @120 in my SE auto, sobering to say the least. Although milliseconds in real time DAYS went by before I was totally in control. Like my Signiture says...

haha gandy much? well on off nights.. I agree actually it starts wavering a little around 100 and from then on it just gets worse, at least in my opinion. Perhaps this will change a bit with all suspension upgrades and the body kit, but I'm sure not by much. As for me I've gone over 160 now at gandy in a G35 as I said and I'm done with speed. After I thought about it its a bad idea I mean death could easily result, at those speeds there are no injuries; edit: unless you consider deacpitation or losing your limbs "injuries."
