I'm sorry for asking this dumb question everybody, but I just recently purchased a 98 Maxima SE manual and could anyone tell me what's a LSD tranny. Also what's the difference between a manual tranny with a locking differential and a non-locking one and which years and models of maximas uses these two trannys. I'm asking because the maxima I brought seems to have a bad input shaft bearing and I've been calling some transmission rebuilders and they were asking me which one I got.

LSD transmission is what those transmission shops are calling a "locking" transmission even though that's not really the right term. LSD stands for limited slip differential.

On the firewall, inside the engine bay, on the passenger side there is a plaque qith your vin #, engine code, and transmission code stamped on it. If the transmission code says RS5F05A then your car came with an open (non-locking) differential. If it says RS5F05V then your car cam with a Limited Slip Differential (LSD, Locking diff). So this is how you tell which transmission you have, unless someone swapped one for the other before you owned the car (highly unlikely, but possible.)

I am going to jack this thread since everyone is talking about prices. Where can you find cars with bad transmissions and all. I have been DYING to find 96-98 with a bad tranny or engine so I can swap the hell out of them. Autotrader and cars.com are all generally working cars minus the damaged/wrecked ones which have frame damage.

BTW that is an AMAZING deal ... makes me jealous.

I guess I30s use a different code... letter "K" is for VLSD in 1st gen I30s. I guess that is for Canada cars, in the U.S 4th gens never had that, right? It looks like a GXE...if you need a transmission get the VLSD and the drivers' side axle for it to work. I would do the pass side axle at the same time while the trans is out. If its auto it should be easier to find one. Pretty good deal for the car, shouldn't cost more than a $1000 for everything needed for a VLSD conversion.

I've seen a US spec I30t with the V on it, there's no K on the one I've seen and I've never heard of it mentioned ever on the .org until right now. It's not in the FSM either. Can you take a pic of the plate so I can see it?

hmm well for those of you who are looking for a good car with a blown tranny...the auto is gone on one of my 95's. I was going to replace it and sell it fully working, or perhaps sell it as is if the price was right.
http://www.cardomain.com/ride/212421/6

Wouldnt come with those wheels, either the sawblades or the steelies... and a budget y, cefiros, trunk lip spoiler, stillen slotted sport rotors and pads, alpine stereo...rest would be all back to stock. Granite pearl, very rare color, 119k miles... if anyone would be interested let me know.

I got my 95 5spd for $2500 in October, just needs new brakes, a little body work and some serious cleaning.

shots of my $1200 maxima

I bought my gold 1995 5spd SE with 160K miles in great running condition, a/c, leather, bose system, etc. for only $400, needs some body work on the drivers side but that soon will fixed in the next 2 weeks.

how much does it generally cost to put a 5speed in an auto 4th gen? also, how long to the autos last compared with the 5 speeds?
