Depends on what you're looking for.

Do you care about brake squeal? Dust? Pad or rotor life?

I really like raybestos quiet stop available at rockauto.com. Inexpensive, performs great, comes with shims, no noise and low dust.

Theres also a Group Deal for PBR Deluxe. They are cheaper than QS's and reviews are decent.

Well, I have had Porterfields and the QuietStop is not quite as good. Consider it a better version of stock for less. Unfortunately, better stopping performance than QS or stock means less life, and a heck of a lot more dust! To me, even the stock pads had very good performance--any less is unacceptable obviously.

In terms of stopping. You'll never beat the Hawk pads out of that list....
I have the Hawk HPS and they're incredibly...
But I do have a BBK, so I stop a little better than the stockers .
Almost all the guys in my group have HPS pads though... i've been through ALOT of pads, and the HPS have provided the best initial bite and least amount of brake fade...
GREAT pads!

What about ceramic brake pads? Apparently they don't create dust and last forever.

You can't have all three.
Decide what your priority is.
Want the best stopping ability: get the Hawks.
Want little to no brake dust: get some ceramic or something that doesn't dust...
Want something that lasts forever: Get a crappy pad.

I'm not saying get Hawk's... but you can't have all three...... EBC's are great pads as well.
There are plenty out there, but good pads will dust.... Though the HPS's I have on don't dust that bad.

Ceramic pads do dust, their is no such thing as a dustless pad. The dust is easy to wash off w/o srubbing, I have axxis ultimates on CDS rotors and love them. Rotors are two years old and are holding up fine with these pads. Hawks HP and Hps are good pads as well, I would get one or the other.

Personally... Over the years I've tried various brake pads...

Stock Nissan pads are great for every day driving, but suck for performance braking... I went through some pads on my TT Z pretty damn quick.

Axxis Metal Matrix are good for performance, but can be noisy when cold, etc...

I recently tried Hawk HPS pads on my truck after reading a variety of posts from friends that they'd been great on the track... (yeah I know that doesn't correlate well, but whatever). They're AWESOME on my Truck... I mean it had good brakes before (rotors are HUGE) but now the thing nose dives if I really get on the brakes... I've got a 2002 Dodge Ram 1500 by the way (Quad Cab). BUT... they put off a CRAPLOAD of dust... I don't drive the truck much (due to gas prices etc) but the Chrome 20s it came with from the factory get QUITE dirty from all the dust...

I just ordered the Brake Package from Jason in the GB section, but switched to Hawk HPS pads for an extra $30 over the PDR Ultimates... Also bought some "bronze" wheels to go along with the brakes... hopefully they'll hid the brake dust a little better then my trucks Chrome Rims (which the dust turns bronze, strangely enough, lol).

Personally, I like the Hawks... can't complain at all. Good cold performance, no fade, good repeated application performance (in a Full-size truck mind you!). So I'd expect they work great on a Maxima. If you want JUST the pads really cheap, check out performancepeddler.com, and enter "maxima" in the Wholesale login to get the forum discount. I ordered my truck pads from there at $55 shipped... which you just can't beat. They're ~$50 a set for the Maxima. (95-99). They're $60+ everywhere else on the web and PerformancePeddler.com has free shipping in the Continental 48 States.

What is the major problem with brake dust that everyone keeps talking about? Does it just get on the router and decrease performance or something?

No, the only issues of brake dust is increased annoyance factor... i.e. the dust gets all over the wheel and tire... Like have you seen all the lazy Yuppie's driving their brand new Infiniti and BMW Sedans and they have almost BLACK front wheels... yeah, brake dust... Increased braking performance normally equal increased brake dust...

I had Hawk HPS pads on my BMW and they were EXCELLENT pads. I would highly recommend them. The dusting is not bad either because the color is a little different and doesnt show as bad (besides the fact they just dont dust that much to begin with).
