Stupid intake question
Im going to order the injen cold air intake for my 98 se auto. I kno this is a really stupid question, but I live in the hudson valley area of NY. Am I in great danger of sucking up water? Or would I just have to worry about puddles?

The Injen "hot air" intake system is the worst intake you can put on an automatic tranny equipped 4th gen. Your throttle response will be horrable, especially in the summer months. It's just an awfull intake system, don't waste your money on it.

I disagree I have an Injen on my 5spd and it is fine i haent had any problems at all i got a heat shield and removed the plastic under the bumber and im pulling in some pretty cold air. but mine is mounted rather low ill post some pics later on if i have time.

Thanks for the backup guys. I just think that the real issue shouldnt be worrying about water...it should be worrying about wasting your money. The Injen does nothing for your car but look a little nicer and puts a big hole in your pocket. Its not worth the $200. Should forget about the water problem and think about that.

yeah i made that mistake when i first bought my car...right after i got my car i ordered the intake. It sounds real nice but i was looking for performance and all i get is hot air.... with the injen you don't need to worry about hydro locking cause it is still fairly high off the ground. and you do have that plastic cover under the intake so you will be fine, unless you drive into a lake LoL

The PR is a CAI. Place Racing. http://www.Cattman.com-$189/$195. I'm doing the BOMZ style CAI intake from ebay. Style just like the PR. Gonna pop a better filter (monsterflow or k&n) instead of the one they give you and add it too the stock midpipe.

I think that is the exact same intake I bought for my 98 auto max about 6+ months ago. 40 bucks... however you will need a better filter as the one that comes with there is terrible. Just get a k&n cone from autozone or something. I have had this through a whole chicago winter, and did not have any problems as far as water getting down there. My friends also has this style CAI, had it on his max for about 3 years, and his car is still running. Tho, however, I did notice that the metal part on the bottom of the filter I use is rusting. So water may be getting down there...but then again my cover that is suppost to cover that area is slightly ripped so no suprise water may be splashing up a tad for me there.... however I have noticed no problems.
Oh by the way that style CAI requires you to cut a whole in your fender next to the battery... just making sure u know that... Only say that cause I believe the Injen "cai" doesn't require you to do any cutting.

I don't know what kind of crack you smoke but I would never drive my car with a big-*** hole on the front, not to mention that not having a clearance light there can get you a "fix it" ticket. You could have just taken out the clearance light instead of wasting it by hacking it to hell. In addition, that idea is no better than the Injen design. The filter is still inside the engine compartment, not totally isolated from the engine heat. I'd take a Place Racing over your design any day. Sorry, I have looked at many many intake set-ups and this is a ridiculous one...just MHO.

The intake is totally isolated by the custom heatshields. Then, cool air is drawn thru the many nook and crannies in the driverside headlight/clearance light area. Cool air can come up from under the bumper or thru the lower valance. You can remove the clearance light if you are going to run the drag strip for more airflow.

Whoa whoa whoa, calm down buddy. That's a clearance light I had laying around with a broken lense and broken mounting tabs that I hacked up for track use. I just took a picture with it on to show what it would look like at the track and give a better idea of where I had the filter located. I do NOT drive around like that.
I still maintain that my design is better than PR (not 100%, but in most ways), and definitely better than Injen. I didn't just slap some piping and a filter on and call it an intake, it's more thought out than that. My filter is located in the same place as the one you were praising above, it just doesn't have a heat shield (which is also in the works for the future, anyway), so I don't see how it's so much worse. I've already done some hard runs through the back roads here on relatively warm days and that area is still fairly cool compared to the rest of the engine bay, not to mention my piping is still nearly-cold to the touch because it's black plastic instead of shiny metal.
Also, for whoever asked, it sounds alright...but since I'm keeping the stock resonator in place for throttle response (I'm auto), it's not exactly the loudest setup there is.
I still maintain that my design is better than PR (not 100%, but in most ways), and definitely better than Injen. I didn't just slap some piping and a filter on and call it an intake, it's more thought out than that. Please explain how much better your design is from Injen, moreso, from PR. PR's design isolates the airfilter from the rest of the engine compartment. No additional heatshield necessary. Also, the airfilter is at a better location where it could get more cooler air. PR's design is just way more practical than many designs I've seen. And hydrolocking isn't an issue because of a device called bypass valve.

Compare the bends on the intake pipe. Air does not like to turn corners nor does it react favorably when confronted by an obstruction such as a sharp bend in a pipe or a baffle. Notice the bend right after the MAF, the lesser the bend the better the airflow.

Mine is actually a sweeping 90º bend, not a sharp one...trust me, it could be much worse. Lowe's had 90º bends MUCH sharper than that. Like I told you in a PM, I'm going to try and atleast reduce that to a 45º in the future, if possible.
About the filter: that's all that fits. I had very strict requirements for filter size due to space (given everything that's in that area). The filter is bigger in person than the pictures make it appear, but it is smaller than your average filter. It is pretty tall, though, just not big around.

Why are you giving Tatanko such a hard time? His idea is great and is as good as PR design. What the hell with the Injen? So what if the filter is in the engine compartment? Its not right behind the fans blowing hot air from the radiator. Id take any intake over Injen any day. Thats bull.

You obviously didn't read some of the reference articles (regarding CAI) that I have been posting at these intake threads that have been cropping up in the forum lately.
And as for giving Tatanko a hard time, I don't think he took it that way. There are no arguments. We even had a quick discussion in PM. Neither one of us took it personal so why should you?
