$693.54... Did I get jacked?

Ok, it was $693.54 for the following:

2 brake pads
rear right brake rotor
rear right caliper
brake fluid
right front lower ball joint

All with labor and such. I was getting a constant squeak from my rear right wheel until I came to a complete stop. Took it to Tuffy, and here's what I got. Just wondering if they screwed me or not.

a little high

Sounds like about $200 in parts...so $500 for labor? A little high. It's about 3 hours labor, being conservative.

You did get owned indeed. I work at AZ. All those parts alone as stated by deezo should have ran you roughly 190 before tax.

If your asking us, than you must have asked yourself this question. You must have had 2nd thoughts sometime during this whole thing. If you feel you got ripped than you got ripped. This is why I don't trust anyone than my Brother, My Dad, and myself to work on my cars.

What a weird question, eh? Maybe the poster wants empathy, but the way he wrote it he seemed to want abuse.

We all get jacked every day. Heck, my utility bill hit $280/mo. this year, and it was warm. In 2k3, when it was really cold, it was about $170. So I got jacked, and so did anyone else who uses natural gas.

ExxonMobil #1 baby, they did nearly $1 billion in sales PER DAY in 2k5. I got 2 $50 ExxonMobil gas cards in my wallet, so I'm doubly jacked! The only entity richer than them is China, man, 853.7 BILLION $ (US) of foreign cash reserves. No wonder they can build the world's most expensive building in Beijing, and they can't even move on rebuilding the World Trade. It's a new world, and I got that all from this post! hehe

What about $500.00 for new water pump and chain tensioner at the same time? Is that a good deal?

Most of that $500 was for labor, but its not exactly an easy job in the least. Very limited space.

I was quoted $1.2k for the same job.

Sorry to add salt to the fresh wound but you did get ripped off. For that kind of money, you could have gotten yourself a good exhaust system and headers. Even a clutch job that requires alot more labor than yours wouldn't come close to what you paid for labor. The only difficult part of your repair was replacing the lower ball joint still shouldn't cost that much.

If you must rely on someone else to fix your car, at least shop around first. BTW, going to 2 or 3 different shops isn't exactly called shopping around.

I just paid a tad under that today for my car ($690.74). They replaced the power steering pump return hose, front and back valve cover gaskets, o-rings for the sparkplug tubes (x6), intake plenum gasket, rack and pinion boots, alignment, all new valve cover washer-screw/gasket things (18 in all I believe), and a new PCV valve grommet. Everyting was OEM stuff except for the valve cover washers. The price included all the parts plus the install. I think for the amount of work they did on my car it was a fair price...

I can't stand people here who always tell people they got Jacked! Remember, if you are handy and can change these things out yourself good for you. If you are a regualr consumer going to a garage, then of course you have to pay labour charges. So what if garages charge say $80 an hour and you can do it for free.

In some cases, time is money or time is better spent with Family. Personally as the other guys says above, we all pay for stuff we can't do.

I.e. fixing computers may be easy for me but not for many people, I can't do electrical in my house but an electrician charges me lots of $$ for his trade.

So all in all, look at what is a fair price a shop would charge...not just Parts and free labour.

I paid about $890 for two new rear rotors, calipers, pads and had the front rotors turned. So I'd say no, you didn't get jacked.

He did ask if he got jacked or not! Read the thread topic. Tell us how we should have answered? I'm sure he got the answer to his question. And yes, many of us know that not everyone is a handyman which is why there are how-to's in this forum. The real problem is that almost everyone don't want to read, do their own research, and expect to be spoon-fed.

At least he's getting advices for next time.

You didn't get jacked. These other people here are showing off that their labor is free and that they have no clue about what things actually cost.

$200 in parts IF the mechanic was doing you a favor. Here's more what I would expect: (dealer price).

Rotor $40-80. ($92)
Caliper $75-250. ($335)
Pads $50. ($50)
Ball Joint $40. ($50)

Some very valid points. Sometimes I say to myself, I just changed my own brakes for about $45 plus $15 for the hardware kit, and being overly careful it took about 1 hour. A shop woulda definitely told me I need rotors and calipers based on my mileage, and I coulda gotten burned out of $500+. Good for me, I did it myself. Another guy in the office pays the $500, doesn't get his hands dirty, and simply bills a client another 2 hours @ $1000, or he pads his expense report next time he goes to Shanghai. Who got jacked, me or the other partner? Many people could care less about DIY, and they're entitled. Sometimes we need to keep things in perspective, so I agree with your reply.
