Ignition switch

On my 96, my ignition switch has gotten to the point that for me to start the car, I have to twist the key very hard or even pop it into the start mode before it will start. If I just go into the start mode easily, and then twist firmly, it will not do anything. Am I looking at a new ignition switch assembly? Can I change out my key tumbler and reuse it or what? Comments are appreciated.
