I know there have been a lot of posts about springs and suspension, but I just need some good advice about which springs to get.


I have a 98 se (stock springs and gr-2 shocks) with the 15" sawblade wheels and enjoy the smooth ride when I'm in the city. However I wish I could reduce the wheel gap a little and improve the handling a bit on the highway. I know that in order to improve the handling I will have to sacrafice some of the ride quality, but I dont want to sacrafice too much.

Could you tell me what would be the best springs to lower the car to improve handling and still have a smooth ride, (if possible similiar to stock and also keeping the gr-2 shocks)?

P.S. I do not want a firm ride. If lowering means I have to get a firm ride, I will just stick to stock.

Yeah me too, I want to lower my ride but I don't know which springs and shocks to use. Right now I'm running all stock and I'm looking to get the G35C 2004 wheels on 18X8. I want to know which springs and shocks I should use and how much should I lower it to improve the handling and still maintaina good ride and close up them darn gaps too.

Your ride will be firm if you lower your car with your current struts. The best compromise would probably be the Tokico Illuminas paired up with H&R springs.

I also highly recommend Ben's rear shock mounts. Don't forget to cut a notch off of the bumpstops too.

Gr-2s would be too rough of a ride with lowering springs. The softest lowering springs would be the H&R's or the Tein H-Techs.

 

Well it seems like the H&R are the way to go with the Tokico Illuminas. Question whats the recommend drop? is 1.5" pretty decent?

I know the s-techs are soft. My friend just replaced his stock integra springs with s-techs and the ride is actually softer than his stock springs. However I did notice that the springs were thinner and that the ride was bouncer. I would imagine that would shorten the life of your kyb gr-2's?

 

Actually 17" rims. If I had anything bigger than that I would have switched over from my AGX's right away.

 

i think the s-techs lower a maxima 1.7" in the back and 2.2" in the front. for a nice even drop

THe maxmods page indicates that the Tokico springs are close in comparison to the H&R springs. I'm considering the purchase of the Tokico suspension kit with the springs and HP struts. Any feedback would be appreciated. I'm new to the suspension mods.

 

If you want a good ride, Maxspeed springs are what you want. I think they're almost stock spring rates. For struts I'd go with Tokico Illuminas, or if you have a little more $ and don't mind doing some more work, Koni yellows (what I have now, they're great). H&Rs will also have a nice ride, but also have an uneven drop I believe--your rear will be lower than your front.

 

I was reading the maxmods page (thanks 1996blackmax) and it stated that the rear sway bar will "do wonders" to the stock suspension.

Will the rear sway bar help reduce the "floaty" feel when I'm on the highway?
I am considering this option instead of lowering the car since it would be a lot less expensive.

 

What do you mean by floaty? The RSB would help to fix cornering floatiness, but not really straight floatiness, if you know what I mean. All it does is pulls the two rear struts towards each other, height-wise--resists body roll in the rear. It won't stiffen up your rear at all and you'll get the same amount of brake dive and acceleration squat, in addition to the same amount of bounciness whenever you go over any bumps.

 

Lowering related question : Will lowering the car be tough on ball joints, tie rods, steering rack, etc..? I'm thinking that lowering will increase the stress on the suspension system...and by how much? MA roads suck with potholes

 

okay question!.. 1996Blackmax do you ever bottom out with your 17's?
