Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay

I posted a lil on this in a non related thread.. But.. Got my KYB GR-2's put in this weekend and WOW!!! What a giplantic difference!!! My old struts at 117k miles were SHOT. I could push in the strut rod with my finger they were so weak. Kept my stock springs and the ride is SWEET. So solid and tight but not harsh at all. After the alignment and wheel rotation/ballance it drives like brand new and im not even exagerating. Also put in the vehicle speed sensor which cured my downshifting problems/harsh 1st-2nd gear shifts!! It really is like driving a new car and for a total cost of $387, I couldnt be more pleased!!! YAAAAY.
Anyone know of a temporary fix for torn cv boots? Maybe something including duct tape?

there is no temporary fix for torn cv boots... try not to drive for too much with them torn. It's not normally a big deal to drive a week or two before you replce the axle. (unless they were just torn and you want to keep the axle for some reason)

a temporary fix would be to not fix it. I recommend fixing the axle as soon as possible, very easy job, takes little time, you could do yourself or an org member should be able to do for you under an hour.

I drove on a broken boot for 1 year, and fortunately no problem, I dont recommend though, as you may not be as fortunate as I was.

I was told that unless they are making noise it is safe, but to obviously get it taken care of soon. I can do anything to a car maintenance wise, but what is the cost for the axles/joints if they come together? They have been torn for almost 2 years now. No noises or troubles though.

If someone could clear this up, that'd be super duper... Ive had torn cv boots for about 2 years.. Turn the steering wheel all the way to the left/right, trying to listen for noises, but i never hear any?? Im going on a 1600 mile road trip in 2 days in it to colorado... If they fail, I should be warned that they are about to bust with a clicking or some sort of noise correct??? I knew someone that got hurt bad because their cv joint failed while driving, but he knew it was bad before hand... Please tell me im not going to die!

Well, if they had just torn recently, and were not making noise, I'd say take it to a mechanic and have him replace the boots.

However, since you've been driving like that for 2 years, there's most likely a ton of dirt in there now. So it would be wise to get the whole axle changed.

That being said, from what I've read over the years here, yes, they do make some noise before they fail.

I'm not sure I would trust it on a 1600 mile trip though. Good luck.

So if one does fail, what is the worst that can happen?? That axle will just not get power to it? It will seize up and wheel will lock and i will lose control?? Can i still steer if it breaks?? I was thinking about cleaning it out as much as i can through the tears and throw some axle grease in there and rig up a saran wrap/duct tape temp. boot on it so nothing can get inside.. I know it sounds really bad.. But if its not making noise i really dont want to worry about it until i get back... I dont have the time or money to get it fixed within the next 2 days..

saran wrap/duct tape temp. boot
Oh no! Don't bother. It will be all off again in the first 5 miles.
I knew someone who drove his car (not a Max) with junk CVJs and one did indeed fail while he was going round a bend pretty fast. It spewed all the ball bearings and the shaft just thrashed around making a mess. He was lucky to avoid leaving the road because he lost all power at that point.

I woudn't drive 1600 miles w/o going over everything to make sure it is good to go. A bad cv going at hallf way through would be very expensive and will leave you stranded. You would have to get them installed unless you bring tools and jack(s) with you if they go on the way. I would fix them and anything else before you go on a long road trip.

Not trying to dissagree.. Being this is not a good fix.. But why would it come off?? If i clean out as much crap as i can through the torn boot, pack some grease in there, and wrap it with saran wrap-then duct tape, and zip tie on both sides.. It should say on for a long time i would think???

Here's what Im getting at... Have cv joints ever been known to fail without warning?? Are highway miles going to be harder on the joints as opposed to city driving?
