Garage advising: EGR hose+valve...

Check engine light came on a few weeks ago, took it in, they tried a "quick fix" of cutting some of the EGR hose off and plugging it back in but they said it's pretty cracked and will probably need to be changed.

Fast forward a week or two and sure enough check engine light comes on again. After 5 minutes of driving, my car is making a hissing/sucking noise when it's anywhere below 1,500 rpm. As soon as I give it gas above 1,500 rpm it goes away. So made an appointment and I am going in monday. They suggested I change the EGR valve at the same time, not just the hose. Didn't say they saw anything wrong with it but to do it as a precaution because if I don't, check engine light may come on again and it'll be that needing to be replaced.

I've known the guy for a while but business is business. Is he blowing smoke up my tailpipe or is this SOP when doing the EGR hose?

Thank you for your time,

They replaced the hose(about 2-3 inches in length) and when I got home, the whistling sound is still there, no CEL. Goes away when I press down on the accelerator. He's asked me to drive around a couple days to see if the CEL comes back on and to see if the whistling noise goes away.

Anyone experienced this before? Outcome?

Thanks!
