sloppy steering response
sloppy steering response
i was on the highway and my front wheel came off, but i was able to slow down and pull over to the side of the road. all but 1 of the lug bolts snapped off, and the wheel was heavily scarred along the inner diameter due to the rotor contacting it. no whenever i go moderatly fast, the steering wheel feels as if there is much more play at high speed, almost loose. any suggestions as what may have caused this?

Hitting a big enough pot hole might cause it or maybe loose lug nuts, but i agree thats pretty crazy.
As for the problem, jack it up make sure everything is in place or has no damage. Turn the wheels both ways fully and listen for any noise. In my opinion this should have cause signifigant damage to springs/strut if you were going fast enough and it slammed down on the rotor. If you cant find anything wrong take it to a shop and have them throw it on a rack. Hope this helps.
BTW how fast were you going when this happened?

Simply having old/crap stock suspension on my car that has recently gone out makes the car feel completely unsafe at highway speeds. You go over a bridge or hit any big bump and it feels as if you might as well not have your hands on the steering wheel. So maybe from the jolt you blew your front or simply your right suspension components, and it will be easy as fixing them.
Thank God you were able to slow down before....whatever problems you have now pale in comparison to (bodily) repairs! I really suspect you must have had loose lug nuts, who is the last person/place to work anywhere around wheels? The wobble is a good indicator of lugs (too loose) backing off or possibly a suspension component (unlikely) failing completely. Now that damage has occurred, you will need to have each piece of (definitely right side) suspension checked, starting at rotor up through spring/strut assy and verify condition of LCA and tierod. Glad your OK though...please verify condition of all components!!!
Thanks for all your replies..Brad I don't have stock suspension lol. I inspected the coilovers when I took the wheel off, and replaced it. All good. What I mean is, now when I travel in excess of 60mph, the steering wheel sort of turns on its own slightly, it doesn't feel as sturdy as it once was. could be the bushings of what not; I'll have to revaluate I guess. Thanks!
