1. This is a beautiful country. Never having seen the midwest it is beautiful. Rolling hills, beautiful plains, wide open skys. It snowed in Wyoming... in June. Perhaps that's normal. The rockies are incredible and the west coast is very interesting. Good mix of people culture and scenery.

2.I took two Maxes. a 95 auto GXE and 97 5 speed SE.
Gas mileage came out to 30 MPG on both going 85. Don't know why. Usually average 27 ish on a good tank.

3.The Bel 980 radar detector is awesome. On wide open spaces it detected the nasties up to 5 miles. Too much in advance almost. You have to wait forever before you slow down. Saved me saved me saved me. At the least it was about 1/4 mile warning and it was always accurate with the signal strength meter telling you precisely how close they were. Falses are easily detecable. Real threats get more steady bars. I feel naked without now.

4. The cars both now scream. Same altitude, same weather, same everything. Much better pull from a lower RPM and then some. But they absolutely haulll! Maybe it's the gas here on the west coast, but I think it has something to do with the fact that I ran them at 75, 80+ on a road trip for 4 days and cleared out whatever muck they may have collected. No oil was burned period. Both have over 100K. These VQ engines kick. DRIVEN.

Wow. Sounds like quite the trip...and all in *4* days. I myself can't drive for that long...start nodding off. Also, congrats on surpassing the 100k mark!

Hey that trip sounded nice, i'm looking forward to taking my 97 Max on a 2,500 mile road trip soon. How much does that radar detector cost? Is it 360 degrees?

Bel 980's are about $220ish on Ebay.

Amazing Protection. Yes it is 360 degree. The rear protection works fairly well but since most threats are in front of you instead of behind you shouldn't worry too much about that. It doesn't make you invunerable - keep your eyes peeled especially under overpasses. Still -plenty of warning and detects K and Ka band better than the Valentine which is twice the price but still an exceptional unit all the same.

Keep in mind that radars only work relatively well if you are driving "in the middle of nowhere". I bought a Bell 950 3 years ago when I was driving from NY to Boston and that thing alerted my of every single overpass, train station, weight station and whatever else was along the way. It would only keep quiet when I was driving through the forest/field with no electrical interference near me. I assume it would sound then if there were cops.
More importantly, I used to work for a major electronics retailer in NY and the Bell guys would come in for training/promotional rurposes. They themselves said that the radars only more or less acurately work when there are no distructios around (going cross country would certainly qualify).
To sum it up, don't put too much faith in it....

regards
Roman

I am thinking about taking a 7-8 day road trip myself

Out of the Bay area on July 4th week.
What are some good places to visit?

I busted 28 MPG going from LA to Vegas with 4 passengers and a full trunk. Weight of passengers and luggage exceeded 800 pounds. I was travelling on average 90-95 MPH. I did hit 130 once playing with an M3. I was very pleased with my gas mileage.
