Change Your Spark Plugs!

Wow guys, i changed my 98 I30's Plugs this weekend, went with NGK V power Coppers, took mabye an hour, used a little antisieze, the car is noticebly more responsive and im gonna bet my MPG will go up too. The front 3 and the pass side one on the back were all real easy to do and were used, but not in too bad of shape, the last 2 that take a few more minutes looked like they might have been skipped over at the last change and were real bad.

Anyway just though id share how a little time, and $12 in parts can change your car.

the only one i found hard was the very last one in the back row, where it requires taking off two extra bolts and hold it up so you can pull the coil out

Yes! it is. Oh and word of advice for you guys. Don't over tighten because at one point it will get stuck and you will get screwed over.

I used a tourque wrench but no anti sieze :-) No difference from 80,000 mile plug to new ones.

Any of you guys experience rougher idle at cold startups when switching to copper? I had copper NGKs for almost 20k now and noticed from the beginning that the idle gets a little rough but smooths out when it warms up. Im going to put my platinums back on soon though.

Not quite sure if I understood your sentence, but it sounded like you replaced your plugs and noticed no difference? That would have been my guess, I know of no difference from 60k to brand-new way back when I replaced my plugs for the first time. My friend drove his 96 GXE auto 230k without a single major service at Nissan before he got his Avalon earlier this year and retired. He said his car still did 26 mpg on his trips. Sometimes there's the placebo effect, I know it's helped to sell K&N all these years.

I thought platinum spark plugs were recommended for maximas in the owners manual. can anyone verify that? Is it ok to use copper instead? I know copper doesn't last as long, but they sure are cheaper.

Yes, platinums are the only type recommended in the owners manual and the repair manual. Yes you CAN use copper instead, for some it's worth it, some it's not.

NGK is OEM equipment for our cars... You'll find most vehicles will run the best using the OEM plugs. I remember on my old truck I put in Bosch platinums and it ran like ****, swapped to NGK and it was a night and day difference.

Copper's are just fine, you just need to swap them every 30k. Some people argue coppers are actually better and provide a better spark, due to copper's inherent nature of being a better conductor. + we're talking 1-2 dollars vs. 3-4xs as much for the platinum. Copper, FTW!

NGK Laser Platinums FTW!!!!!

NGK part# PFR5G-11. Yeah they like $10-13 each but its what the car came with from the factory. I changed mine as soon as I purchaed it from the other owner and it had fairly new coppers in it. Noticed a lil increase in MPG and bit more get up and go in higher RPM range too.

Bosch worked the best in my 3rd gen. I don't understand what people's problem with Bosch is. I've put them in everything from Corollas to Vettes and only had an issue with them one time.

Having been a member of this website for over 4 years, you have had ample opportunity to peruse the numerous posts that attest to Bosch plugs being the wrong plug for a VQ engine. They are better suited to European cars.

Get with the program and stick with NGK plugs.

I went with coppers, they are easy enough to change, and the difference between $12 for plugs total, and $12 for each plug is huge, plus i want to change mine more often, lowers chances of problems.

I have had my original NGK OEM laser platinum plugs in for over 11.5 years (64K) and the car runs just fine with them. Given the tendency of copper plugs to oxidize faster, I would likely be on my third set of copper plugs by now.

MY 3rd Gens VE is not a VQ. Obviously someone didn't realize that 1 post before the one you quoted, you know the one with the big a$$ NGK spark plug on it, stating that I suggested the OE NGKs. I've been on here for over 4 years and have been a technician for 7 years and unlike some people who spend ALL their spare time on here I haven't seen many posts about Boschs not working well in the VQ.

Your argument doesn't make any sense. You are saying you are correct because you are a technician and you have good experience with Bosch, but then you say that you haven't seen many posts about problems with them, and then you say that you don't spend as much time on here as other people.

Do you see the logical fallacy here?

What I said was that since I'm not on here all the time I haven't seen any post/threads about people having problems with Bosch. Whats not logical about that? Then for someone to tell me to get with the program and get NGKs when I clearly stated that I do have them in my car now was just stupid. I'm not saying that since I'm a tech I'm right and he's wrong. Just that I haven't had any issues with Boschs in anything else. I always try to put the same plugs that came in from the factory with any car.

True that. Funny how Nissan wants us to replace a 99's plugs every 60k, and a 2k's plugs every 100k, when really they're good for much longer than either recommendation. If your car is punching out 26-30 mpg on the highway why mess with it besides oil, coolant, brake fluid, clutch fluid, and an OEM air filter?

Given you are posting in the 4th Gen Forum and now own one, I could give a rats *** what your experience with Bosch plugs was with your VE engine.

My comment was particular to the VQ engine. And I reiterate, given you have been a member for 4 years, perhaps you could do a search on Bosch plugs in the 4th Gen Forum and you will see what I mean about avoid them like the plague if you want your VQ engine to run properly.

I have nothing further to add given your attitude.
