replacing hood struts

How do I do this? Mine haven't been working for a while and I'm getting tired of getting the ol' stick out everytime, so I just bought a pair off of ebay. Is it easy to install?

Could not find it in the How-To stickies.....or Google.
Thanks in advance

or you can just use some vice grips clamped to the strut to hold it open. much cheaper.

this is extremely easy to do. The struts have bolts on both ends that swivel, just use a small crescent wrench to remove/replace the struts. They screw right into the hood and the car.

nice find! this one's $10 cheaper than the ebay ones (with shipping) and i can pick these up at Advance Auto Parts
I will come back to this in a few years [or months...] when the ones i get die out again.

EDIT: Oh wait..is that only for one hood strut, or a pair? ..picture only shows one.. the ebay one comes in a pair for $33 shipped..hopefully it'll work well. vise grip sounds like a good way too instead of the stick lol..jus gotta find mine

anyone tried the $23 pair from infinitysource on ebay - or is that the set that don't line up and are too powerful.

I tired of resting the hood on my head while I check the oil.

I just bought a pair from eGay and they don't fit. Looks like I'm going to have to go to Pepboys.

hood struts

Don't buy hood struts over the internet. I bought some and they didn't fit. Luckily I was able to send them back. Go to the local auto store and get the ones with the lifetime warranty for under $30/ea. Save the receipt because you'll probably be getting a new pair maybe every year from now on. I suspect there's something different between the 94/95 and the 96+ models.

I don't know why so many people have difficulties with aftermarket hood struts. I bought a pair off ebay at around $50 shipped two years ago. I don't remember the name of the seller, but IIRC the seller claimed that the manufacturer was SACHS and they were OE type. Sure enough, when I received and compared with stock struts, I didn't see any difference. Installation was easy, I didn't have any fitment issues, and they have been there since then without any signs of wear.

I guess I was lucky not ending up with struts that don't fit.

Kragen: Price is for 1, buy in pair (but as others said, you'll end up replacing them every so often anyways, so it's a good deal). Left and right are the same, you just rotate the head. Install takes ~10min total. More time might be needed to find a suitable stick to keep the hood up while you change out 1 side at a time.

I got my hood struts today from Kragen/Checker for $70/pair. Free shipping and free replacement if they fail - bonus! going with the lifetime replacement is definitely the way to go... you can spend half as much buying the ebay ones, but once they crap out and you have to replace them you really haven't saved any money.

I just bought a pair of OEM I30 struts from one of the salvagers who sells on eBay for $35 USD. The dealer price is $127 CDN, and there are no aftermarket ones available for the I30. If you don't find auctions for the parts (I didn't), try asking the sellers directly, I don't think they list them since they arn't worth much.

I guess the key is to not mention that you have a Maxima. Everytime I go to Advance or Autozone, they quote me $90 for the pair.....My vise grips work good tho.....

I think I have replaced those struts about 3 times in four years, with the last time being about 18 months ago. They work great for a few months, then the heavy hood makes them go bad and fall on my head. I have been trying to fix this for years, and the only rational solution to this problem is to buy a carbon fiber hood. Lighter weight = longer hood strut life. HAHA

Carbon fiber hoods will need some custom work to get the struts going.

This is really easy to do. Just look at the struts! Only a single bolt thingy is holding them on. Just remove that, supporting the hood, and replace it with the new one. Bought mine from Advanced Auto for $20 each.

Oh and when I say easy to do I mean easier than changing your oil.

The struts that are on e-gay, aren't from IIRC, nor are they SACHS. They're from a seller called infinitysouce. His are the struts that everyone is having problems with! Don't buy struts from e-gay, just go to your local auto parts to get them!

Looks like $11 per side from Rock Auto. Not sure if they're good or bad, they're just the OEM copycat type. There's also ones from Sachs for about $17 each. Unless Sachs is some magic brand I'd just go with the various ones.

435204402613 is a discount code (expires in Aug) knocks off 5%.

Your stories are making me hope that mine never die... replacing them each year sounds like it sucks.

Understood. But the seller I bought the struts from wasn't infinitysouce, it was the littleguyent. I didn't disclose the name in the previous post because I discovered that he is no longer selling the same struts I bought.

Ebay

Last summer I bought from a seller on EBAY "****ENSS" total price shipped about $26.00. He is still there with what is most likely the same struts. Mine are still working fine, after approx one year. No AZ or Kragen or anything other than NAPA within 150 miles of me. Good stuts on EBAY, and they are still working.

is there any way to mount one of those hood stick things that you can fold and unfold or whatever that come on cars that dont have hood struts?

I got some from AutoZone, they fit OK but didn't last more than 3 months. I would get quality over price anyday.

I just bought them from the same seller on eBay. Total price was $43 for the pair....arrived in 3 days. They're made by SACHs, fit perfectly, and unlike the previous pair that I bought from Auto Zone, they seem to have enough power to push and hold the hood up. I'm glad to hear that they might last longer than the Auto Zone Strong Arm, which didn't really do well from the start and only lasted a few months before they just wouldn't hold the hood up at all.

so i finally had time to replace my struts today. bought them from that infinitysource dude, and it works...lil fitment issue, like when i clipped the bottom part in, and then tried the top part, it was off. but with a lil push, i got the top part in. it works, so it's all good..but next time, i'll def go for the lifetime warranty ones!
