damn brakes

damn brakes

on my 96 gle and 97 gxe i changed both front brakes. when i put my car in reverse and let go of the gas to press the brake, i hear a click noise, one solid slight gunk sound. it happened to both maximas of mine i'm using autozone's duralast brakes, any suggestions?

i have the same problem i just changed my brakes with the duralast gold and the rotors from autozone, i didnt bleed the back but i hear the same noise from the back when in reverse

I can tell you all the thing's I did wrong with brakes over the years and maybe one will hit:

leaving out the clips - the pads are loose in the calipers and this causes all sorts of nasty braking problems - much worse than a "clonk"

shearing the metal tubes out of the rubber bushing brake caliper to hub slides (this was a honda) this made the brakes clonk like you say.

leaving the shims off because I couldn't get the pistons in far enough but this just makes them sqeal.


The clonk sounds like there's some play in the brake assembly. In normal motion you're biasing the brakes in a forwards direction. When you hit the brakes the assembly shifts back due to braking force.

Check that everything is tight, moving smoothly, appropriately greased and complete.

If it just started after the replacement job, then it must be something simple. Retrace your steps.
