What about a 99? The 99 has some of the upgraded 2k parts on it... engine wise. Didnt the 95-96 have a "better" ECU in it? Some cars are built better then others. Just a thought i would share.

RE

95 and 96 maxes were a couple of hundred pounds less the 97-99 maxes.Thats why they are a bit quicker. Also 96-99 maxes or maybe it was 97-99 not sure but I think recieved more emmisions crap.

Is the emmisions crap why they weigh so much more..what else added weight?

Duplex and Emax95 are correct!!

A 95 gxe is the lightest of the bunch.
Also they did put more restrictive emission stuff on later models.
My wife's 95 GXE auto is as fast sometimes faster vs. my 97 5-speed SE. Both stock except for 17 wheels and tires on mine.
If I make a sloppy shift her car could easily smoke me.
I run 0-60 times in her car around 7.2 seconds.
Mine is about the same.
However, the connected feel from the 5speed totally transforms the engine. It's FUN to put around in second or third and be able to punch it and not have to deal with some HARSH downshift from a slush box and just take off instead.

Your bumpers aren't as beefy as the 97+ cars.. That accounts for some weight. The newer car have side impact beams. More weight.. And the SE and the GLE probably have more options.. More weight. So the SE and GLE are more luxurious and slightly safer.. You're faster.. Hehe. Another reason.. Your friends are fat..
