I tinted mine from the outside, but its not a light coat. There still real visible, both during the day and night and Ive never been pulled over for them and I passed inspection with them as well.

I tinted my tail lights from the outside as well. I sprayed on a product called Nite Shades made by VHT. I only tinted the upper part, not the entire thing. But there is no reason why you couldn't put a few light coats on there to darken it up a little.
Here is a link to my cardomain site. Scroll down toward the bottom to see my tail lights.

I hope this helps out. Good luck.

Gahh... tinted tail lights. Next it'll be lace curtains, nodding dogs, and air fresheners.
Only way to go is a good bright set of LEDs to wake up the **** behind that you are coming to a stop. Or spend grief time with a neck brace.
And one more thing: When you get rammed, a smart loss adjuster might very well conclude that your modification of the DOT spec rear lights, invalidates your insurance policy.
Dumbest thing I ever heard.
Oh and for the newbie: take an anger management course.

Shut the fawk up already. You have never even seen my tails lit up so how would you know just how bright/dull they are?
Theyve been this way for over a year now and Ive had no issues.
