car cut off on the highway
car cut off on the highway
Getting on the highway car began stuttering. Jerking around. As I was pulling off on an exit, it cut off and the CEL came on. I turned it on and managed to drive it to a steet, pulled the code and got 0505(nothing). reset ecu, let it sit 5 mins and drove off. after getting back on the highway same thing. i pulled on the side, let it sit, athen drove it to my exit. let it sit for about 10 mins in a parking sot again because it cut off. Then drove it to the deck, this time without a problem. The cutting off happened as soon as i would get on a highway. Roomate thinks its the fuel pump. what do you guys think?

sparkplugs and fuel filter were changed about 30k miles ago. 300zx filter was put in so i doubt its cloged.

is there a way to check it to make sure its bad without actually replacing it?
does it throw a code when it goes bad.

if its your fuel pump you should have trouble starting your car too, unless its just starting to go back, in that case the car shouldnt stopped all the time only once ina while even when its on the highway and it will probably start happening more frequently in differnt situations. Then u know its the fuel pump.
with Coil packs u usally experience loss in power, and lots of shaking and codes....

everything started this morning. no problems before. i have no trouble starting. it does feel the same as hitting the speed governor. could it be the relay?
I think the speed limiter is like a fuel cutoff, so technically it should feel the same as if your fuel pump was dying at certain speeds or rpm. Does any of this happen on the street?
give a lil more detail as to what speeds or rpms your in when this happens. and if your an auto. dont want for you to get paranoid but a bad tranny can cause some very random problems related to what your describing without even showing a single code.

im a manual. im going to attempt to drive it home and see if it throws the light again. we drove it in circles around the parking deck and the only thing wrong was the ide rpms were dropping very low.
I'm guessing the problem is fuel starvation. Changing the fuel filter is the easiest thing, even if you think its good its only a few bucks and most likely to be at fault.
Beyond that, you have to spend some time to diagnose it right. You can try throwing parts at it, maybe its fuel pump, maybe the pressure regulater, maybe the EVAP system, maybe a pinched hose, maybe its not something related to the fuel system after all. You are just shooting darts bilnd folded if you dont take the time to diagnose it right.

Spend $85 and get the best diagnostic out there, THE DEALER.
If your cars cutting out, that's very dangerous.
It's worth spending $85 at least that way you'll know exactly what it is, instead of guessing and replacing parts that don't even need replacing .
Good luck and stay safe !!!

I would take it to a shop and have them hook up a fuel pressure gauge on it see what your pressure is and if it drops off when the engine asks for more gas. If thats the case it could be your fuel pump. Like another guy said it could be your MAF but I have doubts on this one it most likely wouldnt rev up much at all with it out. You can try cleaing it with MAF sensor cleaner. Couldnt hurt.
But I personally would check your pressure before thinking about changing the pump.
As well I believe the maf sensor throws codes so I doubt that one even more.

Anyone notice this thread is 13 months old?
Pulling codes is easy, so...maybe try it before posting. This way, when you DO post, it will be informative enoguh so we can give you the best/most accurate answer.
It took my car 1 week of acting dumb before it finally gave me a code.
