Transmission smoking!! Help please!
Ok, I'm driving down the road when I hear a loud grinding noise. I pull over to see if there is anything stuck under my car that's dragging. There isn't, so I get back on the road and notice my gears are not shifting smoothly and my transmission won't go past 2nd gear. I pull over again and smoke is coming from the transmission and I leave the car in a parking lot.
I have a 95' GLE and it's a automatic. It has around 185k miles and it hasn't given me much trouble. I don't know if the tranny is shot or the tranny fluid is just really really low. Anyone with any input is appreciated. Also, if the tranny is shot, then anyone know how much it is to get it repaired/replaced? Thanks in advance.

Uhh.. its time for a new trans... if smoke came out of it its time to get a new one... trust me do not try to get it fixed anywhere because they will charge you a arm and a leg for a rebuild.... go on www.car-part.com and get urself a used one....

you best bet is to go with a used one bcuz my old max was a 96 auto tranny and i had to replace mine and going with the used was SO SO SO much cheaper and the tranny held up great since and as far as i know is still holding up since i sold the car

yep, most of the time its cheaper to find a good used one then getting it rebuilt, one time at my dealership, some guy in an xterra blew his auto tranny, cost him over 2500 to get it rebuilt, when he could have got a low km used for under 1k.
