5 speed shifting woes

So after my beloved '87 bit the dust, I got a sweet 99. My first stick shift, everything seemed OK when I test drove it, but now there seems to be problems. Mainly the 1-2 shift can be rough. It's hard to make the shift, and if I shift too quickly, it feels like it's grinding. Those two were the only problems, with all the other shifts smooth. It feels like it's starting to do it a little for the 2-3 shift as well, but it could be my imagination. Everything else is ok, no problems going into 1st or reverse or anything, and the clutch isn't slipping.

Any ideas? Please help....

BTW, it's a 99SE Limited, 77k miles on the clock.

Change the oil before condemning the synchros. It may help enough to avoid needing a rebuild.

I recommend Redline MT-90.

Change the tranny oil, before you condemn it. Tranny oil possibly hasn't been changed in 77k miles!!

Jeez, is it a grind or just a bit difficult to get into 2nd? If so thats normal. Just get used to rev-matching the 1-2 shift or slow down ur shifting.

Thats actually more like what I expected to hear, although it's unfortunate. I'll try the fluid change, maybe I'll get lucky. FWIW, a couple other guys I talked to said it might be the pressure plate, or possibly the pilot bearing. The amount of metal that shows up in the fluid should narrow it down a bit though.

The pilot bushing doesn't even touch the input shaft. Consider it nonexistant.
