5-spd transmission compatibility question.

5-spd transmission compatibility question.

I have about 200k miles on my 95 SE 5-spd and the transmission is starting to make a small grinding noise. I’m not sure what it is but figure that it will need to be replaced sometime in the near future. Since the engine also has the same mileage I’m looking at a VQ35 swap sometime in the future as well. I don’t have ABS.

My question is this… what year Maxima, I30 or Altima transmissions are compatible and which will require replacing the axles? The reason I’m asking about the Altima is because I noticed they sold a 5spd VQ35 and these transmissions can be found with low miles. When I searched Car-parts.com for replacement transmissions in my area I found several 95 and 96 transmissions but they all had over 100k miles, I’m not too interested in swapping with another high mileage transmission. There were several available for 2004 Altima with low mileage.

I'm pretty sure that you'd need to match up a VQ30 5-speed tranny. You will only need to change axles if you go to a VQ30 with VLSD, in which case you need a drivers side axle.

If you want a VQ35, you should replace both tranny and engine together.

Altima I don't know about, bell housings might not be the same. According to some the gears are also weaker in the altima but I can't say either way since I haven't seen inside one.

As far as maximas go, if you DON'T want to change the axles, you need a 95-01 transmission with the same differential as your car currently has. If you have an open differential, you need a 95-01 NON LOCKING (as they call it on car-part.com). If your car happens to have a limited slip differential, which is HIGHLY unlikely, you need a 95-01 locking diff transmission. Any of those years will work, from a maxima or I30. If you end up going with an 00-01 transmission, it WILL move yours shifter about an inch backwards from where it sits now.
