now what

please help me some one . i have a 97 se 5 speed. about aweek ago this problem started. its my gauage for the hot and cold temp. some times it won't move at all or most of the time if not everytime it goes up to about the half way mark and moves up and down real fast almost flickering and ish but never goes over the half way mark and it doesn't overheat. but im just worried that if i keep driving it like this something bigger will happen. thanks for any info

i checked and topped off the coolant.
i have a brand new coolant temp sensor (replaced about two months ago)

I have trouble following you as well, but i think what your saying is that the temp gauge never moves up very high, check your thermostat, thats prob. it, stuck open, cheap to replace at about $10

i think hes saying when he drives, sometimes the coolant temperature gauge on the dash does not move up at all, or it moves up and down erratically without reaching the normal (halfway) point. a thermostat that getting stuck wont cause that, it would cause the temp needle to read normally until operating temperature is reached, and then, depending on how often it is getting stuck, it will raise the needle to high or drop the needle to cold, but not quickly back and forth, because since it is stuck it takes a while for it to move.

if the needle is moving as fast as you say and sometimes not moving at all, your problem lies in your temperature sensor, not the thermostat. the temp sensor relays the temp of the coolant to the ecu and then the dash, but the thermostat is mechanical and relays nothing. for the thermostat to be broke (sticking), you would have to have a smooth and periodic rise and fall of the needle from normal operating temperature. whereas for the temperature sensor to be broke, you can have erratic movement of the needle or even no movement at all. check both the harness and the sensor, if the sensor is bad its either just bad luck or something is causing your sensor to keep dying.

most probable is the wiring harness & connectors. Did you stress the wires at all when replacing the sensor?

After that the temp gauge in the instrument cluster has a bad connection.

It's a whole bunch of labor to find the 5seconds worth of soldering that'll fix it.

Warm the car up to get a reading on the gauge and then wiggle the harness in various places to see where the bad connection is. When you wiggle the right spot the gauge will go crazy.

2 years and you still don't know how to post legibly on the forum.

Anyways I would replace the thermostat then go from there.

what u trying to say punk? na j/k i just didn't put any commas where they where suppose to go to separate the ending of some sentences but lets skipp school for now and go to votech till i fix my ish. i think it might be the gauge cluster or wiring harness like others stated since thats the last thing i messed with to run the rpm signal to the summit racing rpm switch . thanks everyone u too nismo14 (stop trying to play people out too nismo14 not too many people like criticism)

Also maybe consider a coolant flush and fill.
