Need to hook up mp3 player to a stock '96 fast! HELP!!!
I just got a Creative Nomad Zen Xtra MP3 Player (an Ipod rival) and am going on a cross-country road trip beginning of next week. So I desperately need my car to be capable of playing my 6000+ MP3 tunes.
I have a '96 Maxima with stock radio and tried using a tape adapter but it seems as tho the freakin tape player is broken...just me luck. So i'm looking into other options.
I don't think I wanna fool around with FM transmitters/modulators and that crap...I'd rather have a direct connection. So I'm looking at aux inputs...does anyone have more info on this like if it's possible to put on a '96 stock system and how it can be done and where I can get the parts to do it?
Or I may just drop the aux idea and get the tape player fixed. You think the whole radio will have to be replaced for the tape player to work?

Why dont you want to get an FM transmitter? They work great and are the easiest way to do it. If my FM transmitter works in big cities like SF and LA, then one will work prefectly fine for you cross-country.
I have the monster FM transmiter btw.

Well if u had a bose stereo, you coud've added aux input. I had FM transmitter before I added aux to my bose and IMO they both sound almost the same. Just make sure you choose good frequency on FM transmitter...

As far as going aux on a stock radio without bose, your f'd. You have a couple options:
1) Fix your Tape Deck
2) Buy a new iPod Ready H/U with Aux input
3) Go the FM route
Cheapest way? Probably #3, Best sound quality? #2. Best bang for your buck? #1. You decide.
euRo, did u add an aux input to the stock stereo/radio or do u have an aftermarket stereo/radio? cuz i see we have the same year maxima, so if u added the aux input to stock, mind telling me how you did it and what you used?
i added the aux input to stock..

Can't you use one of those interface things where it's a cable that hooks up to your HU, then there is a cable that hooks up to the ipod/mp3 player to the interface and thats it? Or are you guys talking about the same thing???
Very clutch euRo! Thanks for referring me to that thread...i'm gonna try to wire it up today.
Did you find that it worked exactly the way the wires are shown soldered in that pic? Or did you need to make any changes to it?

I use a tape adaptor with the bose stereo. Setting the ipod to the highest volume reduces the background noise and everything sounds great.
So, my recommendation is fix the tape player and buy a high-quality tape adaptor, such as the sony.
