So last night I was driving home and I noticed a loud noise kinda like a Civic with a fart can behind me. No ricer in the rear mirror. So I am like WTF. I have to step on the brakes and the noise stops. I do a little investigating while I am driving. The noise startes when I roll and will go all the way up to 80 mph. The noise stops though when I step on the brakes and also when I get under 30 mph. I am wondering if my Brakes are sticking or if it is just the brake pads? Any suggestions or problem solvers?

 

I just noticed a funny noise coming from the brakes in my new car (new to me), auto part guy said it may be the caliper catching.

I'm going to see what a mechanic says on monday, because I can't fix it myself.

Check and make sure theres nothing between the pad and the rotor... seems far fetched but it might be it.

 

i noticed a similar sound, i got a buddy to roll the car down the driveway while i listen for noise near the front wheel and sure enough it was the brakes. It seems one of the pistons in my brake caliber is stuck.

 

wow why would your brakes make the sound a ricer's car would make? it might be something else connected to your exhaust system..just my cents.

 

If its a humming sound from the rear it could be that caliper(s) need to be replaced. It's a common problem for 4th gen's. Mine started making a noise when I first got it so the dealer paid for it thank God.

 

I recently changed my rear pads to ceramics. Although they stop well, they rattle and vibrate and make obnoxious noises that I can hear over the stereo. I thought I was losing the rear whell bearings. I was told by a mechanic friend of mine that some cars don't tolerate ceramic pads very well. I change the pads saturday to genuine Nissans and the car is now silent. I never would have believed that the rear pads could work OK but make so much noise. The thing is, they only made the noise when they wer NOT being used. As soon as you touched the pedal, the noise stopped.

Did you figure it out? Sounds like something is rubbing. If you take the wheel off it should be pretty obvious. Also make sure that the pad springs are on. Some people say they don't make a difference but I have noticed that without them the pads can vibrate sometimes. Also see how much beef is left on the pad. Maybe the noise maker is rubbing now.

 

Here's an idea. Loosen the lugs nuts, jack up the car, take off the rear wheels, and inspect. Finally post results.

 

Well I have been at school all day. After I got out at 1:30pm I took it over to brake master for a FREE inspection (did it that way b/c it was free). The noise was this little metal piece that tells when the pad is needing to be replaced. Bad news after that is that the driver rear calipar is shot to hell and the pass side is damn near gone too. The front brakes are a couple thousand miles away from total deadness(?). So I got a beautiful quote of 650 to replace the rears and to replace the brake pads on the front. I'm like f*** that. So they put everything back together and I am going to do it myself. First I am going to get rid of the damn little metal warning thingy. F***** is so annoying and has gotten louder since they put it back together. So now I am in the market for new front and rear brakes. Any suggestions?

 

I now it is not my exhaust. I already know that piece is broken. B-pipe blew off from the muffler. Ordered a Budget one on Friday and it should get here by Thursday or Friday. F*** im so pissed off right now.

 

dude... they tell that to everyone. they get you in with the free inspection and then tell you that everything needs replacing. Don't believe to bull****. Take each wheel off and look at the pads. turn the rotor to make sure tha calipers aren't siezed up... etc. You can inspect everything yourself typically. and if one pad is worn and the others are good that may mean that that caliper needs replacing. thats about 80 bucks at autozone and they give you a lifetime warrenty. All you do is unbolt it, take off the brake line, bolt the new one up and bleed it.

 

Id use OEM pads, buy some rotors out of the group deals section and just get some rebuilt calipers from autozone. The rears are pricey.

 

Oh and the little metal warning thingy means that your brake pad is worn out. That may mean that that caliper is in fact seizing up. check that side after driving and compare the temperature to the other side. If that side feels hot it means the caliper is seized. Do not continue to drive with that pad worn out. It will wear down and screw up your rotors, and make even uglier noises.

 

Well last night I went out and took off the wheel and inspected my rotors and such. Well I found the little metal thing and took it off for now. My brake pads are really low and I am going to order some the minute I get paid this week. I have been testing the brakes lately and they seem to work fine. I have absolutely no trouble stopping. So I highly doubt my calipers and brakes are bad. I think I was just being screwed over like a 5 dollar hoe. So I am going to get the pads and change them and everything will be hunky doory.

I was concerned that something serious was wrong with my brakes because the when I bought it three weeks ago the dealer assured me that "the shop" would have replaced the pads if they were getting worn out.

I was relieved but at the same time royally pissed off when I found that the front brakes were almost new but the rear driver's side was worn all the way down to the metal.

My fault for not checking them myself, but if that's how thorough the inspections are at a nissan dealership I better take it somewhere else to get it fixed.

 

I need some guidance from those who have changed the rear pads on a '95 Max. I came across this link on Autozone's website. Do these steps look right to everyone?

Yeah thats right, its really really easy, you'll spend most of the time taking off the lugs and wheels and jacking it up then you will actually putting in the pad.

 

rear calipers require a special tool to compress, it is easy as hell, i did brakes all around the day after i got my car, been running ceramics on all four with no probs.

no brake dust and great stopping.

 

My rear brakes took a total of about 90 mins. to complete. I Rented the caliper tool for free from Autozone (deposit of $35.00 and got my money back upon return).

Removed 2 bolts (Pins), knocked off the caliper with a few taps of the hammer, slid off old pads, slipped in the new set, pushed back the piston with the tool, greased up the pads and snugged up the bolts. Simple Simple Simple.

No more scraping noises coming from the left rear wheel.
