Please Help!

I have recently replaced my worn out 99 clutch with a 2001 maxima stock clutch. It grinds, downshifting from second to first if i don't have the RPMs and speed down low enuff. I remember being able to go from second to first with out grinding before the switch and it would only engage when I let my foot off the clutch. Is this a syncro issue, or is it just a matter of adjustment on the pedal to increase the length of travel to full disengaged the clutch in first? When my clutch was replaced It was shot, the pressure plate side of the clutch was sheared off and rivets were rubbign on it. Luckily it was not hte flywheel side. If any of you manual owners out there have had the same issue, and know how to fix it let me know, other wise can you guys check your max's and let me know if yours grinds from second to first?
