Auto Trouble! Help please?

Hi everyone,

My alternator just died and as a result my 120 amp fuse kept blowing. This was caused by an insulator being missing and earthing through the alternator. So long story short the problem caused my auto to go into "limp home" mode. I.e I've lost 1st 2nd and 4th. So how can I get it out of this mode and get my gears back. Any suggestions apart from taking the battery off for a while, and checking my fuses. Is there a way I can reset the auto or anything. Thanks.
