Fuel filter location and substitution query.

Hi all,

Since my unfortunate adventure of getting stuck on the highway w/o gas, I've noticed that my car is running a bit slugglishly. It idles fine and what not, but I feel as if some power has been robbed, and I bet it's due to a clogged fuel filter.

So:

First off - where's the location of the fuel filter in a 4th gen Maxima? I didn't have much time to look for it (work and school), but a quick glance at the engine bay didn't really reveal anything...

Second - what would be a recommended brand to replace it with? Will a 10 dollar Fram work fine for my needs?

Third - how hard is it to replace it and can I do it myself? Or should I give it to my mechanic who is gonna do my brakes this weekend anyway?

Thanks!

people here reccommend putting a nissan 300ZX filter, because it's bigger and lasts 2X longer. I just ordered a regular "stock" maxima filter from ebay.

Take a look @ this one:

I replaced mine in about 10min. it's located on the firewall (just below the master cylinder) on my 96... Just loosen 2 small clamps slide the fuel hose off either ends and reconnect the new filter... Be careful of fuel because the line has some pressure on it.. Some say to remove the fuel pump fuse and let the engine run out of gas, but I don't see a need to do this... Just take your time with it, it's easy. Oh and be sure to start the engine and check for leaks before heading out.

i just replaced mine a month ago, put in a 300zx fram and it fit in fine, just have to push it in the brackets a little harder but it works. btw the hoses are a pain to get off and thats what took me a little while to change it.

Hrm - slightly off topic but - how the heck do i read ecu codes on my 99? I followed the instructions, but all I see in that little hole is the little screw for IDLE adjust... wtf? where is the screw for ecu codes?

NOt familair with the 99 model, but I don't think your gonna have a idle screw on the ecu??? On my car the screw is on the side of the ecu behind a little piece of plastic.. Located about 4 or 5 inches to the right of the gas pedal..

Yeah I looked there but I don't see the big giant flathead screw, only a teeny white phillips screw.

edit

this is what mine looks like:

If you don't remove the fuse mentioned above, then remove the gas cap to relieve some pressure in the fuel lines.

Okay so I went to my ECU and got 05-12... which doesn't exist so I am guessing I am clear and the ECU was smokin'?

In the factory service manual a 05 12 trouble code is:
High voltage detected from the rear heated oxygen sensor. I don't think that would be what is causing your poor performance... but what do I know.

Well i think it was just me being paranoid - i took off on the highway today at WOT and it picked up speed pretty damn fast... I think I was just being paranoid, but I will test the knock sensor with a multimeter tomorrow and also get a new fuel filter.
