Grinded into 2nd like a dumb@#$ ... can someone explain what happened with the syncro

Well as the thread states, I grinded into 2nd yesterday. Long story short, I was trying to chirp 2nd ... to this day I still CAN'T! Bone stock max with stock tires, 146K, original clutch (problem I know). Anyway I shifted as fast as I possibly good and pulled the clutch out before reaching 2nd gear only to hear the most HORRIFYING sound ever. The lever was inbetween the synchro (no surprise).

BUT HERE IS THE QUESTION ... why does 2nd gear go in so much smoother. As a joke, my old co-worker was said, "If your synchros are ever going bad just grind the gear in as fast as possible and it will fix it". Is there some truth to this statement ... even though it isn't healthy? The synchro feels like it is lined up differently. Sometimes I cannot go straight into 2nd from a stand still. The car drives perfectly normal, but since I did it, I can get into 2nd SOOOO much smoother when shifting from 1st. Prior to the dumb@#$ manuever, it was extremely notchy.

Anyone want to comment on why I can't chirp 2nd. I can dump the clutch in 1st at 2K, 2.5K, 3K and it will grab and squeal like a little girl, but I can't get 2nd to just chirp?

Look, the car is bone stock...it needs that little extra...first of all, the clutch on these cars need a little more bite, second the clutch line is not all steel, it's got a rubber part to it, there for, less bite for fast shifts. Also, i'm sure that if you do your y-pipe, you'll be able to chirp second very nicelly. And last but not least, try not to grind the gears, cause there is no benefit to it, you can just screw up the syncros more...change the gear oil aswell, it will shift much more smoothly. Ohhh and if your tires are fairly new, they won't chirp as easilly...

What you did definatley did not benefit the transmission in anyway. The reason it probably shiftes smoother into 2nd is because you really did a number on the syncro.
I was able to chirp 2nd before my y-pipe and new tires. I don't even have to redline to chirp second, i've shifted at 5k-5.5 and still chirp.
Also what95mtlMAXSE said is correct. Change the fluid to Amsoil 75w90 or Redline 75w90, get a SS clutch line, 5th gen clutch, y-pipe and you'll be all set =D

I didn't intentionally grind 2nd. It was a total accident. I really want to change the gear oil and get the SS clutch line from the group deal. Thanks for the quick response. Any other comments are welcome.

it shifts into 2nd smoother now, because you probably ground all the teeth off.

when i was bone stock with 180,000 miles on the original clutch and engine with new tires i could still chirp the 1-2 shift occasionaly. as it stands now, 5th gen clutch kit, injen intake and y-pipe i can chirp 2 without even trying.

You can only use the 5th gen clutch from 2000-2001. The 2002-2003 is a different plate. You should have replaced the lines from the group deal for $25 SHIPPED to your door.

Doesn't take a genious to figure out that a y-pipe and the clutch will make 2nd easy to chirp. I just don't understand how my brother could chirp his ex-GF's 2001 4CYL Tiburon, but I can't chirp my max.

I am getting the SS Clutch lines, new Brake fluid (For Brakes and Clutch), and new gear oil (I think it was neglected by previous owner). That all should help. I am REALLY REALLY trying to stay away from a y-pipe. I do not plan to mod my car for a long time and if I do then it has to be 100% sleeper.

My dream setup is 3.5 swap, stock intake, stock exhaust (Except MAYBE Cattman headers or Cattman Y ... whichever), e-Manage Ultimate, UDP, and the very last ... NOS. I can only start this whole course during the Summer while I work ... I am too lazy to work in college.

Extreme future mod is turbo. I seriously never want to let go of my Maxima ... EVER. It is the reason I still have my 95GLE auto. I never drive it and can't bare the thought of selling it. I want to give it to my older brother, but my dad wants to give it to his brother. My dad's arguement is the fact that my 98SE came through a hook-up of my uncle for $3,500 so now I kinda owe him the favor of selling him my 95.
