Getting new muffler tomorrow, need suggestions...

my 4g has a K&N drop w/ y-pipe, test pipe, and everything else stock on the exhaust. I'm going to have a muffler shop hack the stock (leaking) muffler from the rear section and add either the flowmaster or a decent but not too loud dynomax. I've heard good things from the flowmaster, and think it would be a good combo as long as I dont remove the b-pipe resonator (then it would be too loud). What do you guys/gals think?? Identify muffler model if reccomendation made! THanks!

But the Dynomax Turbo series is loud as #$%*, correct. From what i've heard the exhaust compilation in stickies, the flowmaster 40 series would sound pretty good?

i have the turbo series, very quiet. read this, it'll help u decide maybe...read wut it says about dynomax... http://maxmods.dyndns.org/index.php?MaximaMufflers
now dont go and get one and for some reason it seems loud to u and come back yelling at me, lol. but i'll tell u from my experience, the dynomax quieted my car down TREMENDOUSLY from my previous muffler. i have y-pipe, 2.5 catback, dynomax turbo muffler. they sell it at some autozones or discounts.

Thanks MaximaSpd85, interesting. Something to think about.

NmexMAX, i've heard from several sources that getting a 5g muffler would be a huge waste of time.

Any aftermarket muffler is a waste of time. The A33 unit, if it is a waste of time, will certainly be a cheaper/quieter waste of time than a dynomax/magnaflow or flowmaster.

eBay has them for 60 shipped, as well as on here.

Tell me your sources (links) of it being more of a waste of time than other aftermarket mufflers, and I'll believe you.

Though the car is different the concept still holds truth. On my VQ35DE, I had headers and stock catback and muffler, and still managed over 230 whp/whtq in my automatic.

I agree with NmexMAX. The stoch 5th is a good muffler. It's quiet but is better than the stock 4th. If you want more sound then I wouldnt recomend the 5th but don't put it out of your head for options just yet.

I was speaking in terms of sheer flow diff/note change. But if you are speaking of actual gan/bang for buck, I would be inclined to say you are correct.

Also, with your setup, what kinda numbers are you putting down NmexMax? Throw me a link to the part # or description for the 5g muff (besides just a33)

A33 is the 5th gen. What other number do you need? Any 5th gen muffler is the same. What kind of description are you looking for?

I didn't think the muffler actually did that much muffling on our 4th gens, because I remembere that when my muffler got disconnected from my Maxima, it became loud...but not overly loud.

I got a custom catback later on and it ended out sounding the same even with a larger resonator.

are you talking about an OEM nissan muffler? 60 bux? that's a steal. they are $200+ if you buy from a dealer. I did not see these on ebay or in group buy, do you have a link you can share?

^but that's an "OEM type" not an actual genuine nissan part. there's a world of difference.

ok i have experimented with a couple... heres what happens...

if u have a y pipe with stock resonator... the best muffler is stock... 4th or 5th.. hands down..

if u have a stock y pipe with stock resonator.. everything sounds decent...

currently im running the stock y pipe and a magnaflow 33 in resonator with a magnaflow muffler... sounds ok kinda drowny (which i dont like)...

the dynomax mufflers suck period.. i had it on the car for about 15 minutes and tooke it off... all they produce is drown on our cars.... if u had a gran prix or something than i would suggest a dynomax..

I have a Flowmaster 40 on my car. Everything else is stock. There's some boominess in the 2400 to 2700 RPM range, but at Highway crusing speed, the car is quiet. The exhaust tone is bass dominant. You'll not hear any raspiness with it.
I actually sent some clips to another Org member last night. I still have them if you want to hear them.

All very interesting. Out of all of the sound compilations I've heard, I still haven't heard this. A 4th gen w/ y-pipe with test or "high flow cat" with stock b pipe with 5th gen muffler. Would love to hear it and spend $40-75 on it as it sounds. It is very true what you all said. The y-pipe was the greatest difference by far. But a leaky exhaust is a leaky exhaust period. If i can get it fixed and gain a few nissan ponies, then so be it.

medallion mufflers are really really nice, thats what im going to buy over the winter hopefully, and they're not to loud and they look clean too. but on the down side they're kind of expensive.

What are you expecting to pay only $45-$70?

Not expecting, hoping and wishing. lol. Anyway, went with the dynomax ultra flow series. The other dynomax muffs would be to quiet. I'm hoping that with my current setup, this will sound really good (as long as I keep the resonator).

one of there basic mufflers or these has removable silencer http://www.magnaflow.com/02product/s...ne=main&id=393

honestly, from reading all these things here and there, there is no such replacement of a exhaust that is pleasing to all. everyone has their own taste and their own budgets. you need to understand more flow = more noise. Think of it as wind noise. a y-pipe obviously creates a HUGE amount of flow as compared to our stock ones and when you match that up with a higher flowing muffler its just an increase in noise. yea mufflers are better than fart cans but other then that its how much you wanna spend. i've seen those sp2 or w/e they are be fairly nice overall low tone but they are like $500.

get what you can afford and whats aviable, trial on error. i think those muffler clips we have are nice but pointless because the camera is geared right at the muffler and some of them are in garages which just makes it louder. the clip is great but obviously, we are not always right at the muffler on the ground. we are in the driver's seat with the door closed. So anything heard thru the clip is slightly lower in person.

hey if you wouldn't mind I'd like to hear that. I've been wondering what a flowmaster sounded like coupled to a VQ30. also, did you get the Original 40, one of the delta series, or the Super 40? thanks in advance.
